We go back in time to 1961; the official start of the Vietnam War. It has remained a long-kept secret that at the same time a completely different war was going on in Laos, involving Laos and Thailand in addition to North Vietnam and the United States.

Gustave Rolin Jaequemijns, former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Belgium, was from 1892 to 1895 counselor to the Thai (Siamese) King Chulalongkorn, or Rama V. This made this Belgian the most influential European in the history of Thailand.
'The Market' – Bangkok, a new phenomenon

Just a day trip
Today I'm going out by rental car from Chiangmai to visit a few places where I haven't been in a long time. Start with a drive to the ancient site of Lamphun to revisit the famous temple there.

Although I thought I knew Chiangmai and the nightlife options there, I accidentally ended up in Boy Blues Bar. The lover of Rhythm & Blues will end up in an environment where you would least expect it, namely in the middle of a market hall with an incredibly wonderful atmosphere.

Since the delicate skin of this 'migratory bird' is rather sensitive to the sun's rays, it does not particularly prefer the otherwise beautiful Thai beaches. Down in Chiangmai he enjoys the surroundings again. Thailand's second city has a lot more to offer than the bars around Loykroh Road, the Anusarn market or Doi Suthep to name just a few tourist attractions.

Joseph regularly encounters sellers who want to sell him a clock, especially in Bangkok. Most of them are of Indian descent and the most exclusive brands are shown to you. Years ago he bought a nice looking copy of the Patek Philippe brand.

The journey continues towards Brunei, officially the State of Brunei Darussalam. It is located on Borneo on the South China Sea and is completely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. With 5.765 km², Brunei is slightly larger than Gelderland in the Netherlands or Antwerp plus Belgian Limburg. Brunei was an independent sultanate from the 14th century and then included the southern Philippines plus Sarawak and Sabah. In 1888 it became a British protectorate.

Chulalongkorn, the great king of Siam
Anyone who has been to Thailand before is undoubtedly familiar with the portrait of Chulalongkorn, the king with the drooping moustache. You can see this portrait in many places. Proof that the respect of the Thai for this former king is still very great.

From Bangkok you can easily travel to many countries in Asia. A nice extra is that low budget airline AirAsia departs from Don Mueang to many destinations and it does not cost you financially.
A beer and two Lady drinks
Every now and then when I am in Bangkok I like to pay a visit to my favorite restaurant Ban Kanitha on Soi 23.
In my opinion it is one of the best and nicest restaurants in town. You can enjoy delicious Thai dishes both indoors and outdoors and they also have a reasonable range of wines.
Bangkok–Borneo–Brunei
The only thing the title of this story has in common is that all three start with the letter B. From Bangkok you can easily travel to Asia and with Air Asia for a very reasonable price.
From Thailand to Cambodia
A few special and short cross-border trips are possible from Thailand. One of the most interesting is a trip to Cambodia to visit the immense temple complex Ankor Wat in Siem Reap.
