Five star hotels in Bangkok

Most luxury hotels can be found in Bangkok. There are more than 20 five-star hotels across the city. Many of these hotels are located in the commercial heart and along Sukhumvit Road, such as Ascott Sathorn, Grand Millennium, Fraser Suites, Lebua at State Tower, Grand Mercure, Asoke Residence, The Metropolitan, Sofitel Bangkok Silom and The Landmark Bangkok.

Book a hotel in Bangkok

Because Bangkok is about the size of one and a half times the province of Utrecht, the location of your hotel is important. A hotel near Sukhumvit Road has the advantage that you can quickly reach the Skytrain. If you are planning to go shopping, a hotel near Silom Road is a good choice. If you are looking for a budget hotel, look near Khao San Road. From here you can easily visit most of the sights. There are plenty of mid-range hotels to book near the airport for around 1.000 baht – € 22 per night.

Five star hotels in the rest of Thailand

In all tourist places such as Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi and Koh Chang you will find very luxurious hotels and resorts of international allure with all imaginable facilities.

Luxury Four Star Hotels and Resorts

If you want a hotel with luxury and comfort at a competitive price, a 4-star hotel is a good option. In this segment you sometimes find Thai hotel chains or hotels that are run by the Thai hotel industry. You then get a comparable luxury for a considerably lower price. Certainly the good hotels from the 4 star segment can compete with the more expensive international chains. Examples of hotel chains are Amari Hotels, Centara Hotels and Center Point Hotels.

Mid-range three-star Hotels and Resorts

Especially in the 3 star segment there is a huge choice in Thailand. As a result, the hotel rooms are often favorably priced. Many 3 star hotels are owned by the smaller local hoteliers. Most hotels in this segment have a swimming pool, the rooms are equipped with air conditioning, refrigerator, television, etc.

How do you find a hotel?

You can start by comparing the prices of accommodations on different websites. If necessary, inquire at a travel agency. Think in advance how much you want to spend per night.

Many large hotels have websites where you can book online, these are not always the best available rates. Sometimes a local agent/travel agency can get better rates through volume agreements. Calling a hotel yourself and asking for a discount on the rates can also help.

There are also special websites to book a hotel in Thailand. These websites have competitive rates, often lower than directly with the hotel. Examples of well-known hotel booking sites are: R24 and Agoda.

What are the check-in and check-out times at a hotel in Thailand?

Most hotels in Thailand allow check-in at 14.00 PM and check-out at noon. It is advisable to inform the hotel about the estimated time of arrival at the airport. Especially when you arrive very early or very late.

What alternatives are there to hotels?

Thailand has many different types of accommodations. In addition to hotels, you can choose from:

  • Resorts
  • Apartments
  • Guesthouses
  • Homestay
  • pension
  • Bungalows
  • tents

What surcharges should I expect in Thai hotels?

Usually a 10% service charge, 7% VAT and 1% provincial levies apply to a hotel room. Together about 18%. Unless otherwise stated, these taxes are not included in the quoted prices of most mid- and upper-class hotels. Guesthouses often apply a fixed surcharge for these costs.

Please note whether the prices on the hotel website or the booking site include or exclude additional costs. If there are additional costs, it is usually stated as follows: Room rates are on per room per night basis and subject to 10% service charge and 7% prevailing government tax.

It's a nasty surprise when you find out that you pay almost 20% more than you actually expected!

Can I receive a refund of the surcharges and accommodation tax?

Normally there is no question of any refund of these surcharges.

Staying in Thailand for a longer period of time, what is the best option?

When you stay a little longer in Thailand, you have the choice of accommodation for a long stay. Think of apartments, flats and resorts. These are available for a rental period of a few weeks to several months or a year. The rates are much lower than normal hotel rates. Inquire with various providers.

Budget Hotels, Guesthouses and Bungalows

If you don't find luxury important and are just looking for a clean hotel room to sleep and shower in, you can also go to Thailand. There are many budget hotels in Thailand, sometimes they focus specifically on backpackers and younger travelers. If you look carefully, you can also find nice hotels or a Guesthouse with at least air conditioning in this segment. The most basic rooms only have a fan and sometimes shower and toilet have to be shared with other guests.

Our hotel tips:

  • Many hotel chains have a special internet rate. This is sometimes 40% lower than when you book your hotel room on arrival at the desk. An example of this is Ibis Hotels.
  • Consider booking a hotel room without breakfast. Breakfast in a hotel is relatively expensive. Remember that you can eat anywhere in Thailand. You already have a breakfast in a restaurant for 100 baht – € 1,90. If you like to sleep in, it is better to book an overnight stay without breakfast.
  • Many 4-star hotels offer almost the same quality and luxury as 5-star hotels for a lower room rate.
  • There are excellent Guesthouses in Thailand where you can stay cheaply.
  • Hotel booking sites often charge credit card fees. This way you pay more than you think.
  • When booking, be aware of the additional costs charged by hotels in Thailand. Are the prices inclusive or exclusive of 17% costs?
