In general, the Thais respect the Westerners, Thais are friendly, polite and helpful to them, so that the farang can feel important. But why do the Thais look up to the farang?

Thailand is a beautiful country to live in or to visit as a tourist. There are, however, a few caveats left and right. An example of this is the hated double pricing system. A much discussed and controversial subject among tourists, expats and pensioners.

When I recently decided to pay some attention to the Dutch elections for a new parliament, I thought it would be interesting how the Dutch in Thailand deal with those elections.

Two out of three good, that seems like a good score. I have been deregistered in the Netherlands, albeit with a run-up and have now finally arranged my health insurance, with a few pitfalls and some threats.

The English of Dutch expats

We often blame – not entirely unjustly – the Thais, also on this blog, that they speak little or no English at all. Mastering the English language in word and writing is necessary for Thais to survive in the international (business) world. In general, there is a plea for better English education in Thailand and there is little to argue against.

The cost of living in Thailand has risen sharply in recent months. Inflation has also hit hard in the 'Land of Smiles'. This, in combination with the depreciation of the euro, means that some expats have to tighten their belts considerably. But there is also inflation in the West. Naturally, the question then arises: is Thailand still so cheap for expats and pensioners? On another blog I came across a…

Hua Hin, the seaside resort on the Gulf of Thailand, has been chosen by the visitors of Thailandblog as the best city to live. It ended up being a neck and neck race with Chiang Mai finishing in second place. The seaside resort of Hua Hin is praised for its pleasant living and residential climate. Many western expats, retirees and winter visitors have settled there. The small scale, friendly atmosphere and accessibility are important factors. Although the nightlife is less exuberant than…

The elections are over. So time for another poll. We would like an answer to a question that has led to many discussions: “where is the best place to live in Thailand as an expat or pensioner?” Every city or location has its advantages and disadvantages. In Bangkok you have everything you wish for, but the traffic is a drama and it is very busy. Chiang Mai is beautiful but in some periods of …

There are many answers to the question of what makes Thailand such a pleasant country to live in.” Phratet Thai' -Thailand therefore- means “land of the free people'. In a way, that's not a misnomer. While the thought of sending a small child to the store for a pack of butts makes many a politically correct dry fucker's soy milk squirt out through the nostrils, this is perfectly normal in Thailand. On the moped you don't have to…

What should I do if my Dutch driving license has expired abroad? Why do I have to undergo a medical examination to renew my driving license in France? Can I travel through Europe with my Australian driver's license? Wereldomroep regularly receives questions like this. Time for some answers. For those answers, you can contact the RDW, the National Road Traffic Agency in Veendam. This body 'is concerned', among other things, with the renewal of driving licences, also from the …

Do not be alarmed by the above headline because the soup is not eaten as hot as it is served. Just want to attract some attention and use a kind of Telegraaf-like headline for that. As a frequent writer on this blog and no less interested reader, I have recently been finding myself increasingly annoyed by certain reactions and comments. Knowing better, I should let it slide down my cold clothes. But …

Well not, so and I'll tell you why. My neighbor in Bangkok apparently lived neatly with his Thai girlfriend. He had known him for over eight years. They had been living together for about five years, and also with their son for almost a year. No problem, I always thought. My neighbour, a 61-year-old German who retired early, thought so too. When I'm having a beer...

Here in Pattaya there are many markets, a social meeting place, the same everywhere in the world. We Dutch have also found such a place here on the Tuesday and Friday market. Markets always attract people. Many are there, cafes, eateries and coffee shops. My first market love arose very early on with a James Bond film, partly shot here in Thailand, also in the klongs. I like the Thai smile with the sneakiness behind it. For me it was…
