Reader Submission: Living or vacationing in Thailand…?
This is not the result of an investigation, but the personal experience of a Farang who has been on holiday in Thailand, but also lived there.
The Dutch often traveled to distant countries last year, but many travelers did so without properly informing themselves about the destination. This has emerged from research by NBTC-NIPO Research, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Most common medical complaints on holiday
People who go on holiday sometimes have to deal with medical complaints. Fortunately, many complaints can be remedied (and prevented) yourself. Skin rashes, insect bites and diarrhea are the three most common medical complaints of Dutch people on holiday.
On holiday
Finally back home. Sweetheart and The Inquisitor spent three long weeks in Pattaya, like real holidaymakers. That 'leave' had been arranged long ago, De Inquisitor had arranged it in February. For one reason or another he wanted to stay longer in the infamously famous seaside resort, and that is why he chose a hotel that was almost unknown to him. The private hotel.
A quarter of the Dutch say they will not go on holiday this year. 54 percent of them indicate that holidays are too expensive. Last year, 42 percent thought holidays were too expensive.
More than half of the Dutch go on holiday stressed
Only half of the Dutch go on holiday in a relaxed way. Stress hits young families the hardest: less than half go on holiday in a relaxed way. Young couples and the over-65s suffer the least from holiday stress. It is striking that holiday stress also strikes at night: more than half of the women sleep badly the night before departure, compared to only 27% of the men.
12 million Dutch people go on summer vacation
This summer, almost 7 out of 10 Dutch people want to go on holiday, that is almost 12 million Dutch people. Compared to last year, this is an increase of 240.000 holidays (+2%). More than 8,7 million Dutch people are expected to go abroad this summer (+2%), mainly in Europe. More than 2,5 million Dutch people opt for a long summer holiday in their own country (+1%).
New research shows that 44% of people would like to be a borderless traveler. Despite this, 63% now say that they do not get the most out of a holiday. It also appears that 20% have never really felt 'boundless'.
A third of the Dutch would rather stay at home than go on holiday with their parents-in-law. It also appears that one in ten young men prefer to go on holiday with friends, rather than with their partner.
Holiday exodus for New Year holidays (Songkran) started
The holiday exodus started yesterday, at Mor Chit bus station in Bangkok it was crowded. Millions of Thais go to their native village on the occasion of Songkran to celebrate the New Year with family. Long traffic jams developed especially on Phahonyothin Road as well as Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.
Holiday spending of the over-65s strongly on the rise
The over-65s will spend no less than half a billion more on holidays in the next five years, making them an important target group. While the Dutch population under the age of 65 will hardly increase in the coming years, the group of over-65s will grow by about 8% per year
Souvenirs from Thailand
Many holidaymakers bring home the strangest souvenirs as a reminder of the country they visited. They often disappear after a short time because the buyer quickly gets tired of them. It has been several years since a reader asked the 'Thailand experts' on this blog which souvenirs she should buy in Thailand. And of course the lady in question was not abandoned by the 'experts' and many suggestions immediately followed.
Dutch people increasingly eager to travel: number of holidays increased by 2017% in 3
Last year the number of holidays grew by 3% to a total of 36,7 million holidays. More than half of the number of holidays taken by the Dutch took place abroad (19,1 million).
