Amidst the rice fields and wooden houses, a silent drama unfolds. Girls, barely teenagers, become mothers before they have experienced their own childhood. Abandoned by fathers, forgotten by society, they struggle through a life that offers them no choices. A harsh reality wrapped in an idyllic landscape where dreams die before they are born.

Stories about the countryside of the Northeast spread like wildfire across Thailandblog at this time of year. Anyone who was planning to add another edition to that list had better not do so or should recommend the writing as viewed from a different angle. After all, we are talking about a considerable piece of land that could easily fit the Netherlands and Belgium together a few times. Apparently …

We have been staying in the Thai countryside for a week now, where we are hospitably cared for by Wasana's parents and sister. In the hamlet of Ban Deng (the red village), the pace of life is different than in our society.

Fortunately, Charly's life is full of pleasant surprises (unfortunately sometimes also less pleasant ones). Until a few years ago, he would never have dared to predict that he would spend the rest of his life in Thailand. However, he has now been living in Thailand for a while and in recent years close to Udonthani. Today are impressions during a visit to the high northeast of Isan.
