I am 77 years old and have been taking DIOVAN 10 mg for 80 years to lower my blood pressure. Every morning I exercise 7,5 km and (already 5 years) and when I use Diovan my blood pressure is between 110/65/65 and 125/73/70. Now I have stopped taking Diovan.
I have a question about switching from Zanidip to losartan. Use Zanidip 20 mg per day for some time, blood pressure now 130/80. Have thick ankles now, think of the Zanidip. Want to switch to losartan. Is that possible without danger?
Question to general practitioner Maarten: I take a lot of medicines for high blood pressure and diabetes, is that necessary?
I really wonder whether the complaints I have just described require all those medicines. My doctor here in Thailand said when asked that all those medicines are indeed necessary. My question, are the drugs mentioned really all necessary for the mentioned ailments or could I omit a few without risk?
Question to GP Maarten: Alternative to expensive medicine against high blood pressure?
I take medication for high blood pressure: Olmetec 40 mg (olmesartan medoxomil). This medication appears to be quite expensive in Thailand (30 pills for 1.100 Baht). My question is whether there is a cheaper and well-functioning alternative available in Thailand?
More and more people are surviving cardiovascular disease
The chance of surviving a cardiac arrest, heart attack or stroke has risen further in recent years. People are dying at an increasingly later age from the consequences of cardiovascular disease. At the same time, the number of people with chronic cardiovascular disease is increasing. The Netherlands is expected to have around 2030 million cardiovascular patients in 1,9.
I am 59 and the stent was placed last year in a coronary artery (exterior). This artery was 70 percent silted up. The other veins are all intact.
Question to GP Maarten: I am looking for a cheaper medicine against high cholesterol
A stent was implanted last April and I have suffered from high blood pressure for a long time. I am now taking the following medication. Amlor, half a pill of Nebivolol, and normally also co-lisinopril and Atorvastatin 40 mg. I simply forgot to take the last two to Thailand with me at home. I went to the local doctor here, but apparently he is afraid to change the import medication. That means that I have to pay 1 euro per pill for the Atorvastatin.
Coconut water: Healthy and good against high blood pressure!
Coconut water is not only a delicious thirst quencher in Thailand, the drink also has a number of special properties. Question to general practitioner Maarten: High blood pressure when visiting the dentist
Why is high blood pressure so important before going to the dentist? My age is 73 and hope to turn 74 in February. Live in Thailand for 9 years and visit the small hospital in Kutchap near Udonthani. I do my 3 monthly check-ups (preventive check-ups?) in the same hospital. Due to a toothache probably with inflammation, I visited the dentist on 13/12 where a blood pressure of 170 was found. Sent away with paracetamol and I was expected back the next morning.
You mentioned some time ago that there was no need to worry about the new high blood pressure guidelines coming from a country where the pharmaceutical industry likes to sell, namely the United States of America. Could you perhaps provide some clarity about when we should be concerned about the pressure of our blood, perhaps also specified to the elderly fellow man?
Question to general practitioner Maarten: Can I increase the dose of my medicines for high blood pressure?
I have been using Metropolol for about 10 years. Was 50mg at first, but increased to 100mg a few years ago. And I am now 63 years old. My blood pressure has now increased to an average of 157/102.
Can I increase my dose myself to 125mg Metropolol or to 150mg?
Question to general practitioner Maarten: Medication for type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure
I am a 68 year old man and have been living in Thailand for six months now. I take medication for Type II diabetes and for high blood pressure. Now my supply of medicines that I brought with me is almost exhausted (still enough for 3 weeks). Living in the Korat area, I have already visited three pharmacies and each time I was told that those medicines were not available.

Those who get older almost always have to deal with rising blood pressure. For example, the vessel wall becomes stiffer with age. High blood pressure can cause health problems. What can you do to lower or control your blood pressure?
The Thai Disease Control Department warns that at least 13 million Thai people have high blood pressure without knowing it. More than 50% have had this for years and that can have serious consequences.
