Question to GP Maarten: Have my cholesterol level measured, should I take medication now?
I had my cholesterol level measured, HDL is 4.8 and LDL is 4.4 on average 6.0. According to the doctor there is a reason for tablets, but I doubt this.
I have some questions about my future plans to move to Thailand in a few years. I am almost 58 years old (in August), 1,79 m tall and weigh 86 kg. My BMI is 26,53. I have type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and since the end of April 2023 I am an ICD carrier.
At the beginning of this month I got the flu, mild degree, some fever, no sore throat. I took 4 tablets of Tylenol 500 daily for 5 days. Without feeling ill, I was a bit lethargic with mild symptoms. But concerned about Tylenol, I decided to consult my doctor, as a corona test showed 2 lines. The doctor gave me Ibuprofen 400 (20 tablets) Last used five days ago.
Ask general practitioner Maarten: TIA and drugs against cholesterol
Six months ago I had a TIA and was prescribed two new medicines, the blood thinner Clopidogrel (in Thailand apolets) and simvastatin (cholesterol lowering) and had to replace omeprazole with pantoprazole (controloc in Thailand) because otherwise the clopidogrel would not work properly.
Question to GP Maarten: I'm worried about my low HDL-c
I am D, 62 years old, weight 62 kg, 173 tall. I had my blood tested for everything in November last year and only the HDL-c worries me a bit, because this is 22. I do this every year but it has never been this low, the HDL has never been been over 40 in the past 25 years.
Question to GP Maarten: Is my HDL cholesterol high enough?
Last week I had my sugar and cholesterol tested after 13 hours on an empty stomach. The doctor's assistant says that I do not need to see a doctor with this result. Is this correct since my HDL is only 40?
Ask general practitioner Maarten: Medicines against high cholesterol
My question is can I take Ezetrol 10mg, I certainly don't want to take statins.
I am 58 years old, non-smoker, follow a special diet (keto) because of diabetes, but do not take any medication.
Question to GP Maarten: High cholesterol and statins
I did the cholesterol test for the last time in the Netherlands last year, will email the results later. I've been living in Thailand since January this year and only take my 80mg statin when I've eaten fat. Can I continue with this or do I have to start taking them every day again?
Question to general practitioner Maarten: Medication against high blood pressure and cholesterol
My stock of Prareduct 40 mg from Daiichi-Sankyo (cholesterol) and Olmetec 40 mg (blood pressure), from the same company, was exhausted within a few weeks. For years, this medication has ensured that the results of my medical checkups are perfect and that everything is well under control.
Reader question: Where in Udon Thani can I find the cholesterol inhibitors “Atorvastatin Teva 40 mg”?
Does anyone know where in Udon Thani I can find the cholesterol inhibitors “Atorvastatin Teva 40mg”? I once read somewhere that there is a pharmacy in Udon Thani where you can buy these.
I have a question about my current cholesterol medication. Have had high (total) cholesterol since I was 30-35 years old… value then already around 330, also high triglycerides. Started with statins, simvastatin around age 45, and (total) cholesterol dropped to 190 or so. Take 40 mg of statins daily.
I will send you the results of the last 2 blood tests. What concerns me is the high cholesterol. And so my question is? What should I do?
My name is P., age 68 years. I have been living in Thailand for 5 years. After a life with many addictions such as alcohol, drugs and smoking, I stopped everything 20 years ago. My new addiction has become fitness, 7 days a week. I don't use any medication. In the Netherlands I had my blood checked regularly. In the conversation with the doctor afterwards it was invariably, cholesterol a bit too high, but the good ones compensate for this. And no reason for medicine. Now I have the last two blood results from Thailand and I would like to ask you how to read this and what you think about it.
More and more people are surviving cardiovascular disease
The chance of surviving a cardiac arrest, heart attack or stroke has risen further in recent years. People are dying at an increasingly later age from the consequences of cardiovascular disease. At the same time, the number of people with chronic cardiovascular disease is increasing. The Netherlands is expected to have around 2030 million cardiovascular patients in 1,9.
Question to GP Maarten: I am looking for a cheaper medicine against high cholesterol
A stent was implanted last April and I have suffered from high blood pressure for a long time. I am now taking the following medication. Amlor, half a pill of Nebivolol, and normally also co-lisinopril and Atorvastatin 40 mg. I simply forgot to take the last two to Thailand with me at home. I went to the local doctor here, but apparently he is afraid to change the import medication. That means that I have to pay 1 euro per pill for the Atorvastatin.
Below are my wife's cholesterol levels. She is 62 years old, 157 tall and 68 kilos. Small leak at the heart valve, but otherwise healthy. In your opinion, is it advisable to take medication for high cholesterol? She herself is actually against this, but the doctor considers it necessary.
I have a question about the use of Mevalotin 40 mg, is it useful to use it at my age? High cholesterol is a family affair. Grandpa, father and uncle had too high a level and partly because of this died. Can I stop taking Melvalotin or is it wise to keep taking it?
When asked about GFR kidney failure, Dr Maarten answers about his kidney function values that these are surrogate markers just like cholesterol is. Now my cholesterol is kinda high. But I stopped the statin because I had a lot of side effects.
First of all, my compliments for your column, clear to everyone. My wife (60) did a “Health Check” at Phyathai Hospital in BKK last month. An elevated cholesterol was measured there and had to come back last week for a recheck.
Question to general practitioner Maarten: Prostate and cholesterol
I have a question about my cholesterol and prostate. Every year I go to the hospital for a medical test. In 2014 my cholesterol values were too high and I got this within normal values through small changes in my diet and through fitness.
Being overweight is unhealthy. This is shown by a Canadian study, which clearly demonstrated a relationship between being overweight and high cholesterol. High LDL cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
