I am 61 years old, 1,71 meters tall and weigh 91 kilograms. In 2023 I had a blood test done. All results were good, except for the tumor markers for prostate-specific antigen, which were 3.78. My GP then referred me to a urologist, who carried out further tests, including an MRI scan. Luckily everything was fine; my prostate was slightly enlarged, which seems normal for men my age.
Ask general practitioner Maarten: PSA value
My question is about PSA, my PSA value is almost 16, now I am taking finasteride with doxazosin. I know that I have to use this remedy for 6 months to come to a conclusion whether or not it works. If it works and the PSA goes down, does this mean that if I continue with this, the PSA will continue to drop or will this also come to an end?
Question to general practitioner Maarten: High PSA values and a cerebral infarction
I have a question regarding my PSA. I went for the test today and my PSA value went from 3,45 to 54,16 in 1 year. I am taking Finasteride (Firide 5mg) because my PSA was 12,8 and after 1 year of using Finasteride the value went back to 3,45
I can't believe this and want to ask you how is this possible?
My name D. 173 cm tall, 63 years and 65 kilos. I have my PSA checked every year from 2013 and often during this period. In 2016 state hospital and 2019 Bangkok hospital, I had a biopsy done, I know, and no cancer was found here.
I've had my PSA tested every year since 2008, now I get the results today and have broken a new record. Total PSA 13.363, free PSA 2.314 and ratio 0.173, I know what the values should be and this is not good.
For 2 years I have been taking medication from the local hospital because my prostate is somewhat enlarged and I had to urinate frequently. That has gotten a bit better, 2/3 times at night normally. But I read your advice regularly, also on this subject and I am not familiar with the medicines you keep mentioning.
An extremely unpleasant experience with Cigna health insurance (part 2 – conclusion)
What to do now, switching to another insurance was out of the question given my status as a cancer patient and my age (73), what remained was to remain uninsured.
You probably know them, the glossy brochures full of beautiful marketing slogans from the powerful insurance companies. Complete coverage for almost all calamities at low premiums, the payment in the event of damage is a piece of cake, etc... In practice, it is often a lot more difficult than the brochures promise, this is such a practical story.
Ask general practitioner Maarten: PSA value and prostate
Had my PSA tested again today, that was a while ago. Peeing has actually been going well lately, but my PSA had gone up from 4100 to 5510 anyway.

'Man talk'
But I love to stroll in Thailand armed with my camera all alone through certain neighborhoods or streets where hardly any tourists come.
Question to general practitioner Maarten: Urologist recommends robotic prostate surgery
I am 70 years old, 3 months a year in Thailand like now and healthy. Just suffer from high blood pressure, take Irbesartan and walk a nice distance every day to keep it under control. I have been sensitive to mild cystitis for some time and have taken PSA tests at the time because of the nagging pains. Three years ago it had risen from 5.6 to 8.2. The prostate felt good. I didn't want a biopsy and left it that way.
I am 73 years old. I recently got my PSA blood test result back, it was 7.3. About 14 months ago, the result of this same blood test was 4.2. More than two years ago, my prostate was scanned and no cancer was found.
Question to GP Maarten: New test for prostate cancer
I read on Thailand blog again a question / answer to / from doctor Maarten Vasbinder regarding prostate problem. On this subject I regularly come across questions from compatriots on this blog and that is why it may be useful to report on a new test that I read in the Dutch press this month, partly because PSA does not always indicate cancer but sometimes also indicates on enlargement or inflammation.
I am 73 years old. Yesterday I got my PSA blood test result back, it was 7.3.
14 months ago the result of this same blood test was 4.2. Two years ago I had an endoscopy of my prostate and no cancer was found. However, I was prescribed the drug Tamsulosin Retard 0.4 mg every other day to make it easier to urinate.
For a cheap price
It's time again to have PSA checked in my blood. In the absence of a prostate, the PSA value should be unmeasurable, or as is the norm in the Netherlands, less than 0,1. During one of our trips through the area, we saw that there is a specialized cancer hospital just outside Lampang.
Question to general practitioner Maarten: High PSA values
My name is A. and I am 57 years old. I would like to get in touch with Dr Maarten again regarding my prostate. I want to have a biopsy done on December 22 because my PSA values are above 8. Now I read a lot about this problem and see many different responses.
