As previously announced, my book about Thailand will soon be published. The title of the book is “Thailand behind the smile”. During the twenty years that I have been coming to Thailand, I often heard: “I could write a book about what I heard and experienced here.” For most people, that intention remains the same. I drew from my own experiences, from the many stories I heard from Farang and Thai and this blog was also a huge source of information.

During our holiday in Thailand I am trying to improve my 10-year-old stepson's math skills, but this is surprisingly challenging. Although the contents of his schoolbooks appear similar to those in the Netherlands, there are many unused pages that reveal that he did not learn much. His achievements at home and the gaps in his knowledge base confirm this. After previous successful interventions with a specially designed app, his ability to solve simple sums seems to have decreased again. Despite a lot of practice, his level is lagging behind and we are considering a change of school in the hope of better quality of education. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the current approach and whether a change of environment can be the key to improvement.

I recently made 2 visits to my tax office here in Prachuap Khiri Khan. I wanted more clarity about the new tax rules 2024, also known as “Tue. Por. P161/2566” as well as on the tax treaty between NL and Thailand from 1975, which is now the applicable law. Here is a brief report on the second visit.
