My journey to obtain a Schengen visa for my girlfriend, who will spend three months in the Netherlands this summer, started in sunny Thailand. This process, full of unexpected twists and bureaucratic hurdles, taught us the intricacies of the visa application, from collecting the right documents to final approval.
In December 2023, I discussed the confusion surrounding new Thai tax rules for Belgian retirees on this blog. According to a newsletter from the Belgian embassy, those who stay in Thailand for more than 180 days, and are therefore considered tax residents, must declare their foreign income in Thailand. This may lead to additional taxes if the taxes already paid in Belgium are not sufficient. There is uncertainty and a lack of clarity on this issue, causing concern among long-term residents.
I read on the Belgian website of the FPS IBZ that the financial condition for becoming a guarantor has changed. The minimum amount of 800 euros has increased to 2.048,53 euros! I suspect this will be a problem for many.
The Short Stay Visa (VKK) or Schengen visa is applied for by partners of Dutch people with a nationality from outside the EU. They need a VKK to travel to the Netherlands for a holiday and/or family visit (max. 90 days).
