No great risk of cardiac arrest during sex
According to many, a beautiful death, but also a frightening thought: to have a cardiac arrest during the act. An American study now seems that the chance of this is very small and actually negligible. If people go into cardiac arrest during sex, this only happens in one percent of all cases.
Question to GP Maarten: New test for prostate cancer
I read on Thailand blog again a question / answer to / from doctor Maarten Vasbinder regarding prostate problem. On this subject I regularly come across questions from compatriots on this blog and that is why it may be useful to report on a new test that I read in the Dutch press this month, partly because PSA does not always indicate cancer but sometimes also indicates on enlargement or inflammation.
I am 73 years old. Yesterday I got my PSA blood test result back, it was 7.3.
14 months ago the result of this same blood test was 4.2. Two years ago I had an endoscopy of my prostate and no cancer was found. However, I was prescribed the drug Tamsulosin Retard 0.4 mg every other day to make it easier to urinate.
I suffered a drop foot (drop foot) after a hernia (editor: With a drop foot or drop foot, the forefoot cannot be lifted. Common causes are entrapment or damage to the spinal nerve). For that I now use a splint to keep the forefoot up. It works, but sometimes causes stumbling.
Too Much Salt Causes Kidney Damage: How Much Are You Taking In?
Salt, like sugar and acid, is a seasoning. Still, you have to be careful and know how much salt you're ingesting. Eating too much salt is unhealthy. The mineral sodium it contains causes high blood pressure and a greater risk of cardiovascular disease.
After colon surgery, I use 2 sachets of Macrogol and electrolytes Sandoz, 13,8 G, powder for oral solution daily. This is due to the stool. We are now going to Thailand again for 3 months and these powders take up a lot of space in the suitcases. Any idea if these powders are also for sale in Thailand (pharmacy?) and the costs.
When asked about GFR kidney failure, Dr Maarten answers about his kidney function values that these are surrogate markers just like cholesterol is. Now my cholesterol is kinda high. But I stopped the statin because I had a lot of side effects.
Question to general practitioner Maarten: About my kidneys
Surprised after a routine blood and urine test. Almost all blood counts including Wbc, Rbc, Chol and fasting sugar are within 'normal' limits except for a slightly elevated creatinine, 1,24 mg/dl which should be below 1,17. BUN is in the middle of the normal range. The Bun/Crea ratio is 12,1. Blood pressure 130/70 but with pills, amlodipine and enalapril. The PSA is 4,75.
What can you do yourself against high blood pressure?
Those who get older almost always have to deal with rising blood pressure. For example, the vessel wall becomes stiffer with age. High blood pressure can cause health problems. What can you do to lower or control your blood pressure?
Increase in the number of Belgian over-XNUMXs with HIV
Of all new HIV cases discovered in Europe, about one in six people is over the age of XNUMX. In Belgium and Germany in particular, an increase was observed in the number of over-XNUMXs receiving an HIV diagnosis. There was no noticeable increase in the Netherlands.
My PSA values have been between 8 and sometimes above 10 for the past few years. I have to take pills, Cazosin, to urinate and have to go to the toilet 20 times a day. Now I get advice from the doctor to go to BKK, RAMA hospital, for examination.
'Vitamin C saves lives'
Recent research by doctors in the United States shows that the lives of critically ill patients with sepsis (blood poisoning) can be saved by administering a high dose of vitamin C, in combination with thiamine (vitamin B1) and hydrocortisone. Researchers at the VUmc also see an important role for vitamin C in the treatment of patients in intensive care.
Enough sleep does not guarantee a good night's sleep: Women in particular sleep poorly
The Dutch generally sleep long enough, but that does not automatically mean that we are good sleepers. Large-scale meta-research commissioned by the Hersenstichting shows that a large group of Dutch people, especially women, have sleeping problems. Chronically poor sleep increases the risk of anxiety disorders, depression and dementia, and of physical disorders such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
A quarter of heavy smokers do not reach their 65th birthday
One in four heavy smokers dies before the age of 65. The life expectancy of heavy smokers (more than twenty cigarettes per day) is on average 13 years shorter than that of never smokers. This has emerged from new research by Statistics Netherlands and the Trimbos Institute into the relationship between smoking and mortality.
Monkeys in Thailand, innocent fun or dangerous?
In Thailand and the rest of Asia you come across many macaques, a typical monkey species. They usually hang out at temples and they are a real nuisance. What many tourists do not know is that it is better to keep these apparently cute monkeys at a distance because they spread life-threatening diseases for people.
Question to GP Maarten: My blood pressure is too low, what can I do?
I have been living in Jomtien for two years now, I am 73 years old and I really enjoy it here. No problems so far but my blood pressure was always low 100/80 but has been going down for a few weeks now. Last week 82/67 today 77/65 and now also get dizzy now and then, is there anything to do about this or are there medicines for this?
