The “dogs” in Isan
Every time I'm in Thailand I'm amazed at the way dogs live in the Isaan. I assume this is a model for the rest of Thailand.
Why is the Isaan so terrible?
The first time I was in Thailand I traveled from Bangkok-Hua Hin-Surat Thani-Koh Samui and back. Then I met my girlfriend. She is (surprisingly) from the Isan. The second time I was in Thailand I had to believe it: visiting her parents in a village in the Isaan.
On November 4, the celebration of Loy Krathong will be held again and then I hope to have a holiday in Isaan. Can someone give me a tip where in the Isaan you can celebrate this party? Personally I think of Kalasin, Maha Sarakham or Sakhon Nakhon, but other ideas are very welcome. I myself once celebrated Loy Krathong in Udon Thani and Buriram city.
The Isan Project (video)
The Isan Project is a collaboration of Thai and foreign musicians and singers, who make music in which the influence of mainly Isan music styles and sounds can be heard by using typical musical instruments.
Bamboo Rocket festival (video)
In Isan (Northeast Thailand) and in Laos, the beginning of the rainy season is celebrated in many villages with the traditional Rocket festival or the 'Bun Bang Fai'. In Thailand, the 'Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival' in Yasothon is the most famous festival.
The Boezewush
The real Flemish is a flowery language with words that are very foreign to the Dutch. Like “boozewush”. It refers to a strange, distant and inhospitable region or place. Don't ask De Inquisitor where the word comes from, probably somewhere in a distant colonial memory when Belgium was still the proud owner of the Congo.
Harvesting in Isaan (photos)
With thanks to the Inquisitor, for his beautiful reflections on the raw Isan life. Two years ago I was able to cooperate for a day during harvest time, this is very disappointing for a farang also in good condition. I would like to give the fellow blog readers an insight into my single-day rice harvest, the subsequent harvesting of the sugar cane here some time later, I have left this experience behind me, but out of my head.
Living an Isaan (part 15 and conclusion)
The Inquisitor now has a unique opportunity to follow the average life of a small Isaan family. Sweetheart's brother. A typical Isaan life, the ups and downs, probably with the main question: how to build a life in this underprivileged region? Time for a sequel, The Inquisitor takes you to the past, in a modern age, in what calls itself a modern country. Today part 15 and closing.
Ton Reijnders in Thailand (video)
In this video, Ton Reijnders talks about his life in Thailand, where he has lived for four years now. At 58 he wanted to stop working. He first left for Brazil and then ended up in Thailand. Ton soon met his current wife and decided to build a house in Khon Kaen. On his motorcycle he visits his Dutch friends in the city and tells about his life in Isaan.
Living an Isaan (Part 14)
The Inquisitor now has a unique opportunity to follow the average life of a small Isaan family. Sweetheart's brother. Reader Submission: Traditional Songkran
Last week there was a contribution about Songkran on Thailandblog. However, no reference was made to the traditional Songkran, not even in the many responses. Fortunately, here in Isan Songkran is mainly celebrated in the traditional way, that is, the elderly are honored in exchange for the necessary good wishes.
Living an Isaan (Part 13)

Women from the North East (Isan) are so willing and accommodating because they come from one of the poorest provinces in Thailand. I personally think that's nonsense! My girlfriend was born and raised there lives in Ubon and works in the hospital in the pharmacy. Her friends are hard working women just like her
I have been hibernating in Isaan with my Thai girlfriend for several months now. In a nearby village of Ban Thum, where I had cast my fishing rod at the lake at 6 o'clock in the morning, I was approached by a foreigner. We talked about anything and everything and he told us that further down the lake there is a restaurant run by a Dutchman and his wife. My curiosity was awakened.
Joy and Job: From the textile factory to the stage
Joy is the older sister, Job is the younger sister (Thai: จ๊อบ & จอย). It's two hands on one stomach, it's cute to hear them talk together about their dreams and their common trajectory they've traveled.
Phi Ta Khon, the spirit festival in Dan Sai
The annual Phi Ta Khon festival in Isaan is a large folk festival with a spectacular procession. Somewhat comparable to a carnival parade in the Netherlands, but with ghosts and fertility as the theme. Male fertility symbols in particular are put in the spotlight with a great sense of humour.
CNN lists the Isaan as a top destination
The Northeastern region in Thailand, known as the Isan, has been named as one of the world's top destinations by US news channel CNN.
