Thailand commemorates the Tsunami of 15 years ago
It has been 15 years since Asia and Thailand were rocked by a devastating tsunami on December 26. This disaster cost the lives of more than 290.000 people, including 36 Dutch people. More than 5300 people died in Thailand.

At least 80 percent of Thailand's tsunami and other disaster warning systems are inoperative. For example, it appears that of the eight sirens that should warn residents in Phangnga, five are defective. The reason is easy to guess: overdue maintenance.

On December 26, 2004, during the tsunami, I stayed with my wife in Patong Beach Phuket. We were very lucky because we were safe on the 6th floor of our hotel during the tidal waves.
