During the National Remembrance Day on August 15, 1945, we commemorate all the victims of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in World War II against Japan. The embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangkok also considers it important to keep the memory of the victims alive. The embassy is therefore organizing a memorial ceremony on August 15 at the Honorary Cemeteries of Don Rak and Chungkai in Kanchanaburi.

A memorial service will be held in Kanchanaburi on Monday 15 August. On this day we commemorate the victims who died during the construction of the Burma-Siam railway during World War II, including many Dutch people.
Living with death
No one can escape death and the grief over the loss of a loved one will vary little from country to country. However, customs at and after death differ widely from country to country.
On August 15, the annual commemoration of the victims of the construction of the Burma Railway will take place in Kanchanaburi and nearby Chunkai, including nearly 3000 Dutch prisoners of war from the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army and the Royal Navy. With the capitulation of Japan on August 15, 1945 – now 70 years ago – the Second World War in Asia also came to an end.

On December 26, it will be exactly 10 years ago that Phuket and a number of other provinces in the south of Thailand were hit by a Tsunami. The Dutch embassy in Bangkok and the consulate in Phuket are organizing a short commemoration on this day for relatives of victims and Dutch nationals in Thailand.
