The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has bought nine new Chinese trains with a total of 115 carriages. At the end of this month the first will arrive in the port of Laem Chabang. The trains will be the first to be deployed on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai line from August 11. This is followed by other routes such as to Ubon Ratchathani, Nong Khai and Hat Yai.

If you are not in a hurry and you want to travel cheaply, the train is an excellent means of transport in Thailand. The Thai railways look a bit old-fashioned with the unwieldy diesel trains and the old railway tracks. And that's right. The train in Thailand (State Railways of Thailand, SRT for short) is not exactly the fastest means of transport.

I am coming back into Thailand from Vientiane next month. If I read everything correctly, I would only need a 10-day visa for the last 15 days. I am going by train from Nong Khai to Bangkok. Do you get that stamp on the train? Or do I have to get that at Nong Khai station?
