I have been coming to Thailand for many years now. Usually 1 or 2 times a year for 30 days. Once I stayed there for 2 consecutive months. Now next year I will (finally) retire and we (my love and I) want to spend the winter there for a period of 4 months.
I have a Thai motorcycle license and now I also want to obtain a car license. My international (Belgian international in Dutch, French and German) expires on July 23rd. Since my international driver's license does not mention English, it must therefore be translated as the Thai service requires it.
According to a post from 'Pattaya Update News' on Facebook, foreign tourists who do not have a valid international motorcycle license should watch their step. If they are arrested, they must pay a fine of 1.000 baht and they will not be allowed to drive further.
On the hunt for an international driver's license
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The latter applies to my search for an international driving licence. Although I have had a Thai proof that I am allowed to drive a car for 12 years and that was always sufficient when renting a car at Düsseldorf and Schiphol, a new and cheaper provider wants to see an international driving license for tenants from countries outside the EU. I know that I can drive in the Netherlands for 180 days with a Thai driver's license.
Go to Thailand again soon. Always rent a moped. I've had a fine a few times because I don't have an international driver's license (but I do have a national one). My question: if I have an international driver's license, can I still get a fine, because this is for a moped and not for a motorcycle (mopeds can drive 110 km in Thailand in contrast to the Netherlands and are therefore a kind of motorcycle). I don't have a motorcycle license.
