Dear readers,

If my international driving license applied for in the Netherlands has expired after a year, can I also apply for an international driving license somewhere in Thailand? I would like to rent a car and drive myself if I wanted to go to Australia from Thailand for a holiday, for example.

Regards,

Jan

You can still exchange your international driver's license for a Thai driver's license and use that driver's license to drive in Australia? I also did last year, 6000 km without problems.

If you still have a Dutch driver's license, you do not need an international driver's license in Australia. A recognized translation: https://www.anwb.nl/vakantie/australie/informatie/reisdocumenten

If you still want an international driving license based on a Dutch driving licence, you have to go to the ANWB. You will not find that in Thailand. Until 2 years ago someone else could still go to the ANWB with your driver's license, but nowadays you have to do that yourself.

Recognized translation is often not necessary, it depends on the state in Australia.

NSW, for example, recognizes the Dutch driver's license without translation. The formulation of the ANWB seems partly aimed at selling IDPs.

After living in Thailand for 1 year, I wanted to apply for a Thai driver's license. I only had a valid Dutch driver's license. When I inquired by phone with the ANWB, it turned out that I had agreed to authorize my brother who lives in the Netherlands to apply for and receive an international driving license for me. I sent him my original Dutch driver's license and a passport photo. After handing in both driving licenses together with a certificate of residence from Immigration and doing the colors and the brake test, I got my Thai driver's license. Without taking further theory and practical exams.

That is only possible if you have a 5-year Thai driver's license.

Also keep in mind that if you stay in Thailand for a longer period of time, a Thai driver's license is required.

It is not possible to obtain an ANWB issued international driving license in Thailand. Incidentally, it is mandatory in Thailand, if you stay there for more than 3 consecutive months, to show a Thai driver's license if you want to participate in traffic. The Dutch driver's license, as well as the Anwb certificate are then in principle no longer valid in Thailand! It is therefore better to get a Thai driver's license as soon as possible for permanent residence, this is still fairly easy. A Thai IDP International driving permit can then be applied for on the basis of the Thai driver's license with a 5-year validity.

Perhaps it is possible to send your Dutch driver's license through friends, with a passport photo, and a signed authorization to collect the coveted certificate at an ANWB branch. I think that a short phone call to the ANWB via number 0031882692222 will suffice for an answer to the question of whether this should be done in person or through an authorization.

Jan, if you drive in Thailand on a Dutch IRB and do not have a Thai driver's license, you cannot apply for a Thai IRB.
Thailand issues IRBs, I had it in the hands of someone who had obtained it, it looks like the copy of the Anwb in the Netherlands.
Maybe first have your Dutch IRB converted to a Thai driver's license and then apply for the Thai IRB.
I would like to remark, if you live in Thailand you are no longer allowed to drive your Dutch IRB after a period of 3 months, think of staying insured.
In other words, this is stated in the Anwb IRB: “This driving license does not release the holder in any way from the obligation to strictly comply with the legal requirements regarding residence that apply in the country where he is staying. “ Establishment = living.
In short, go to the Thai driving license office or ... you have someone with an authorization request a new IRB from the Anwb, provided that this is still possible with an authorisation, inform the head office and explain your situation, not at a regional office, I did rather by email.

That so-called ”INT” driver's license / driving license is essentially nothing more than just a translation of the original. Superfluous in the EU, in principle, due to standardization (it mainly concerns admission to which types of vehicles and any restrictions). Is provided almost everywhere in EUR by the national motorists' clubs, such as ANWB/KNAC, ADAC, VTB, etc.

The international driver's license is nothing.
If you have an old one you can make a copy.
It's just money laundering good for the ANWB.

ANWB offices in the Netherlands have different rules, sometimes you have to do it personally
sometimes someone else can do it, it depends on which person you meet
experience in the same office differs per person

    • Nico B says up

You can cancel this difference, so I advised Jan to contact the Anwb head office by email. If you get the answer that with an authorization someone can collect the IRB for you, that person will take that email to the regional office.
If you get a denial from The Hague, you write another email, it will arrive on someone else's desk and they may even confirm.
In the authorization, also include the details of the identity document of the authorized person and of yourself with a copy.
That's how I did and the IRB was provided to the delegate by a regional office within 5 minutes.
      Success.

Last year I showed my IRB and Dutch driver's license to a cousin of my wife who is a police officer in Nakhon Sawan. He didn't understand anything about that IRB of the ANWB. The problem is that it is in many languages, but not in Thai. So he continued with my regular Dutch driver's license and understood this nicely. The problem only came when it was about my moped, which is one meter in Thailand. He saw my moped driver's license and thought this was for small motorcycles, so he allowed me to ride a Thai moped (motorcycle).

Frans, keep in mind that you are driving your motorcycle without a valid driver's license.

Hello Jan, if you are in possession of a Thai driver's license, you will be provided with a Thai international driver's license on request, this is only valid for 1 year, just like the Dutch one, the costs here in Bung can amount to 9 euros, 2 passport photos, copy of passport and visa page, as well as a copy of the yellow book, it took half an hour here, how things go in other places, experience will tell, good luck and good journey Down under.

The Thai driver's license is also valid outside Thailand. The International Driving Permit is required for the language..
In some countries, the driving license is only issued in the national language. The Thai driving license has all information in English, such as expiry date and type of transport.
Furthermore, if you wish, you can obtain an International driving license from various driving schools.
I myself can easily rent a car in countries such as the Netherlands with my Thai driving license
