Reader question: Is it mandatory to have an international driver's license for a scooter?
Dear readers,
Can someone tell me if it is mandatory to have an international driver's license to drive a scooter in Thailand?
I am in Hua Hin and I am regularly stopped by the police who then try to fine me 500 bath. Sometimes I can drive through and sometimes I have to pay.
I was told that as a tourist you only need to have your driver's license from home.
With kind regards,
Ronald
Short answer = YES
You can call it a scooter, but it's just a motorcycle.
An A must therefore be entered on the international driving license or motorcycle license.
You must, as Daniel indicates above, have an international driver's license with an A on it, for motorcycles.
Without it you can not only get a fine, but you are also NOT insured. Not through your travel insurance, but also not through the rental company of the motor scooter.
They are all 100 cc machines or more, and you need a valid driver's license for that, even in Thailand.
I would then quickly get a Thai driver's license. Piece of cake.
Dear Ronald,
Single on foot or with a bicycle you do not need a driver's license?
So yes you need an international or Thai driver's license.
And you get off cheap with 500 bath (probably without a receipt).
Namely, since a few months the fines have been increased to 1000 baht for: no driver's license, not wearing a helmet, not wearing a seat belt.
Greetings.
Gino.
Last year I was stopped with the car and had to show driver's license.
I have shown the Dutch driving license issued by the ANWB.
Not good according to the agents, because they did not know this document, no, never seen it.
I showed my Dutch driver's license and everything was OK.
This falls into the same category as other points of light here sometimes tell. The police did not notice that I showed my bank card instead of a driver's license.
Whether the police recognize it or not… make sure you have the right papers. In the event of an accident, you quickly find out that it is not the Netherlands.
idd only international or thai driver's license counts in Thailand European ID card and driver's license invalid outside Europe.
passport and int. driver's license and you're fine.
short answer again: Yes.
by the way, 500 bath is way too much. The fine is 200 and otherwise say that you are going to pay the fine at the police station, then it suddenly goes to 200.
Again a short answer: YES.
That 500 bath is exaggerated, say you are going to pay at the police station, then the fine will probably be lower. A much bigger concern is your insurance: you are illegally riding a motorcycle! Travel insurance, WA etc can be very difficult.
Hi Ronald.
You just have to have one with you, also for a scooter.
Just before that time at the ANWB in your area along with a passport photo is arranged within 10 min. ?
And the int. driving license is only valid in combination with the valid Dutch driving license. If something happens, insurance can be difficult. You can be banned from driving in Holland while you collect. driver's license is still valid. If they check this out, you are screwed and nothing will be paid out.
Please note that you are also not insured without an international driver's license.
You must have a valid driver's license in every country. And since your European driving license is not valid in various countries, an international driving license has been devised. And in Thailand, that international driver's license is valid.
In the Netherlands you can buy an international driver's license. That is then valid for one year. If you buy it in Belgium, it is valid for 3 years.
Mopeds do not exist in Thailand. Motorized two-wheelers. That's called motorcycle. And for that you also need a valid international driver's license. If you have a motorcycle driving license in the Netherlands, it will immediately appear on your International driving licence. If you don't…sorry.
Hello Leon, That could very well be, do you perhaps also know how this is in Germany?
[email protected]
My question, if you do not have a driver's license A but have a B, C, etc., can you fill in A when applying for the International driver's license?
Leo
Seems pretty clear to me: No, of course.
If the ANWB does not notice it, it could of course be that they take over, but big problems if you have an accident. Better use your brain.
Of course you can lie on the application form, but if you do it right you will fall through the basket immediately because you have to submit the national driving license with the application. Incidentally: even if it were wrongly issued for category A, you would still get the short end of the stick when it comes to insurance matters…………
As far as I know/remember, I have had this 3 times now, you are not allowed to enter anything regarding the status of your driving license, the ANWB counter employee does that, you have to do it again in October and I will keep an eye out.
Can you fill in A when applying for an International Driving Permit if you only have a driving licence?
Leo
Hello Leo, they take over everything from your Dutch driver's license, so if you don't have an A, you won't get it on your Int either. driver's license but………some of the anwb employees sometimes gave an aatje on your int. driver's license, if you said you were going to rent a moped and needed a motorcycle license for that.
Please note that in Thailand you must have 2 Thai driving licenses, 1 for motorcycle + 1 for car minibus pukup for people who don't believe that, I have both so it's no myth
But the strange thing about the matter is that the ANWB with an int. driver's license does NOTHING at all. Is not saved, nothing. But they are numbered, but is more for their administration.
Saving it is pointless. The international driving license – International Driving Permit – is legally nothing more than a translation of the national driving licence.
