Darts is banned in Pattaya

The hospitality industry in Pattaya was once again startled this week by police raids. No, they were not looking for foreigners who had an overstay or are considered criminals, but the bar owners were informed that playing darts is prohibited in Pattaya. Dartboards, which were found, were seized.

Last Wednesday it started in Soi 6, where the popular game of darts is practiced in many a bar. Catering establishments in other streets were also checked for the possession of a permit for playing this game. If that permit could not be shown, the dartboards and other materials were confiscated.

The bar owners were very surprised, because they were not aware of the existence of a permit for darts. That may be true, they were told by the police, because such a permit does not yet exist. The rules for this are being drafted and until that permit is available, playing darts in Pattaya is prohibited.

The ban on playing darts caused great consternation in Pattaya, because darts are not only played by individuals, but Pattaya also has several darts competitions, in which both Thais and foreigners play. The organizers have suspended the competition and have contacted Pattaya City Hall and the Thailand Darts Association to clarify the police action.

New source of income for the police 🙂

Another strange move. You would think they would have learned something after the bridge thing.

    Next action : Pool billiards?

    • Kees says up

If you know Thailand a bit, you don't expect them to learn from that kind of thing. In fact, I sometimes have a 'craftsman' over and I swear to you, even without using Western standards it always seems to me as if they are doing everything for the first time in their lives.

Bridge is not allowed. If you suffer from back problems, you are not allowed to rest on your own folding chair. Smoking an electronic cigarette: Pay a hefty fine or go to jail. Smoking on the beach, ditto. Now darts is not allowed again. Ben Not a smoker myself, don't play darts or cards. Still, I'm curious what the next action will be to make the once friendly country a lot more "cozy"...

      a ban on whining…??

  4. it is says up

No permit for a dartboard… .. Where can I apply for one?
Such a permit does not exist either, but we will still confiscate your dartboard 🙂

The pool tables will probably also be confiscated soon.

Nothing is left behind to kill tourism.

Was recently read that it was even forbidden to bring on a
folding chair to sit on the promenade of the beach road.

    • Blackb says up

Maybe also apply for a permit for a folding chair?????

  5. Constantine van Ruitenburg says up

Such a permit does not yet exist. Trust me it will never happen. Thai invent things in front of you and a stupid farang believes it too….

    • Kees says up

Beats! The vast majority of Thais have great acting talent and they give those who absolutely do not have a TV contract.

  6. Harrybr says up

The application form already exists: it says “1000” a few times.

  7. Marc says up

We add it to the list of the many Thai inconveniences. In addition to all the strange and negative, fortunately still a very small amount of positive things. How long no; is it waiting for the Farang exodus?

Where are we going? Better forbid throwing rubbish on the street and in the fallow fields. Smoking in closed bars, for example. A go go, they can also forbid that, with all those stink sticks, But on darts??? And with the shops that sell darts? What's next?

I have a very sweet Thai wife who lives here in the Netherlands, and I am very happy with that because I would not want to live in that country with its retarded corrupt administrators.
No, then the Netherlands is fortunately not too bad, although it is not all roses here either.

Should have happened much sooner. Darts is not a sport at all in the sense that it comes under the motto 'Mens sana in corpore sano'. The 'sport' is said to have originated in England under Henry VIII in the 16th century. Originally intended to allow archers to practice their skills outside the hunting season. Soon someone in a drunken stupor started throwing the arrows by hand, and by shortening the arrows it became a common game that could be played indoors (read: in the pub). Entirely in line with these developments, a beer or wine barrel was initially used as a target.
It should be noted that the English themselves banned the game, which was mainly played for drinking, in 1908, which ban was only lifted after empirical research showed that it was not a game of chance.
The game is still inextricably linked to British subjects who think they rule the world, indulge themselves in sports, and where women are portrayed on television in an extremely sexist and reprehensible manner. If the players are not arguing with each other, the audience is well advised to create a tumultuous atmosphere that serves no purpose.
A little quality tourist will certainly welcome the measures, eh, embrace them in silence.

Frans, surprising reaction from you, a bit short-sighted.
So if you throw a darts dart you disqualify as a quality tourist.
Nothing wrong with throwing a dart like that.
The fact that a tumultuous atmosphere is created at top matches has nothing to do with a friendly game of darts in a pub in Pattaya, it seems to me.

It is also meant to be slightly ironic, Nico. As far as I'm concerned, ladyboys are allowed to hold a synchronized darts championship on the beach, which we can gamble on with the prize being an evening of company by the winning duo. I'm not that difficult. 🙂

    • chris says up

Let them continue playing darts in Pattaya. The quality tourist has been avoiding Pattaya like the plague for years and it will be a concern that people play darts in Pattaya. Cheer only at one-hundred-and-eightyyyyyyyy (180)….

    • stains says up

It may not be labeled as a sport by you Frans Amsterdam. Nowadays you can earn a nice pocket money compared to other real sports such as, Judo, Rowing, Badminton, Skiing
Bobsleigh, Skiing, Skating Marathon, Swimming etc etc.

Runnerup Rob Cross unexpectedly became world champion this year, winning £400.000
      credited to his account

What are all those other tens of thousands of real athletes doing now with a much lower income

eg Women's football: play European champions for a fee of EUR 600 per month

      So you better throw a few darts for fun and come up with some nice girls [which is now also a thing of the past due to the media}
grab a pint and with some luck and talent earn a well-earned bort of rice for later

      • Gdansk says up

I think the irony meter is off for the commenters. Don't you know French yet?

    • Marco says up

Ha ha Frans exactly you can't sit behind the wheel with alcohol on but you can throw arrows drunk.
      Dangerous to bystanders.
I'm going for a ban on alcohol during darts.

Thaivisa.com now has a nice video film about how the raid and the arrest of the bridge playing group went.
At the end you see that they are taken away in a police pickup.
Do you like clover jackets be wary , before you know it you can make a wild tree with your buddies in the local petoet .

    Jan Beute.

    Read in Pattaya News Today:
Darts board Pattaya police fell apart due to intensive use, funds for a new one are missing.

  13. The Inquisitor says up

    Nonsensical measure, of course.

But are you really going on holiday, a journey of about 10.000 km, to play darts? Don't think that normal tourists will lose any sleep over this.
    Only in Pattaya.

  14. support says up

The police are absolutely right. Darts, bridge, cloverjacks, pool, etc.: these are all activities that have criminal backgrounds. So it should be banned. Even if there is no rule yet requiring a permit, it must be possible to “devise” it on the spot by the Hermandad.

Cockfights, Thai boxing (= cockfight but then by people) are also reasons for criminal behavior.

That all changes, of course, when the operator hands out envelopes with contents to the inspectors of these criminal activities.

    • somewhere in Thailand says up

then they can certainly abolish horse racing and thai football and that big tennis tournament or not sometimes.
You have horse races, cock fights and yes even fish fights and a lot of money is made from that.
