Are you interested in challenging and fascinating volunteer work, where you come into contact with a completely different world than you are used to? Then please read on!

The Dutch embassy in Bangkok and Bureau Buitenland are looking for Dutch-speaking volunteers who are willing to regularly assist Dutch detainees in Cambodia (around Siem Reap en Sihanoukville) to visit.

What does the Foreign Office do?

Bureau Buitenland is committed worldwide to Dutch nationals who are detained abroad. They do this for humanitarian reasons and to limit the damage of social exclusion and thus reduce the risk of recidivism. Bureau Buitenland is assisted in this by an indispensable worldwide network of approximately 300 volunteers! They function as the outstretched hand and the eyes and ears of Bureau Buitenland.

Besides the fact that it is pleasant for the detainees to be able to speak Dutch with someone, Bureau Buitenland pursues the following goals:

  • Self-sustainability;
  • Maintaining and strengthening the social network;
  • Preparation for return to the Netherlands;
  • Improvement of the social position.

Who is looking for Bureau Buitenland?

  • People with a decent portion of healthy "Dutch" sense;
  • People who stand with both feet on the ground;
  • People who can take a beating, can be patient and listen well;
  • People who can work well with the probation service and the Embassy / Consulate and who want to report to them on the visits;
  • People who can handle a digital work environment, preferably in possession of DigiD;
  • People who have knowledge of local beliefs and customs.

What does the Foreign Office offer?

  • Interesting and useful work in a place you would otherwise never visit;
  • Various activities and training for the benefit of your volunteer work;
  • A reimbursement scheme for the costs you incur;
  • Coaching and support by employees of Bureau Buitenland.

Are you the one looking for Bureau Buitenland and do you dare?

Then you can contact:

Or call the Foreign Office directly on +31 88 804 1090

    I've read about the volunteer work - help but can't find what the age limit is anywhere.
    I live in Udon Thani and have been here for 25 years and would like to help but my age is already 78 years old.
    I think this is too old to do any work anywhere?
    I would like to know what the conditions are.
    With regards

      Your job seems to be visiting prisoners.
      In this case apparently prisoners in Cambodia.
      So it seems to me that the most important requirement is that you must be able to travel without problems.

      Furthermore, it seems to me that you should be a good and patient listener and be able to write a report.
      Furthermore, you will probably have to deal with rules and little cooperation within the prison.

      However, it seems to me that the embassy will probably be able to partly arrange the latter itself through their government contacts.

    I live, live and work in Cambodia, but have never heard anything about Dutch people who are detained here, but the Dutch Embassy and Bureau Abroad can always call on me. I have experience with clients within Forensic psychiatry, both youth and adults, but I don't intend to go into a whole process with training and courses because I simply don't have the time for that and I don't feel like it because I'm already very have had many such trainings.
