The sea water along the beaches of Pattaya is polluted. The poor quality of the water could pose a danger to humans and animals. The Regional Environmental Office writes in a report that the pollution of the sea water is increasing. Municipal clerk Chanutthaphong Sriwiset says authorities are looking into a solution. He admits that the quality of the water has declined in recent years.

The water in Laem Chabang, with a lot of industry, is heavily polluted and the water at central Pattaya is 'poor'. The situation is slightly better at Na Kleau (North Pattaya), South Pattaya, Lan Island and Jomtien Beach, where the quality is rated as 'fair'. At least 75 percent of the seawater in the other eastern provinces, including Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, is of 'fair' quality, 12 percent is 'polluted' and the rest is 'poor'. The results are based on 85 water samples taken by the Pollution Control Department and the Regional Environmental Office13.

Pattaya aims to reduce pollution between 2017 and 2021 in line with the policy of the National Environment Board, which announced in 1992 that Pattaya wants to end water pollution. The plans focus on cleaning and waste management. Due to the lack of these two factors, the water quality has deteriorated, according to Chanutthaphong.

During the meeting, the plan was put forward to build a new waste processing plant. It must come in tambon Khaow Maikaew. The municipality is also considering expanding two existing water treatment plants in order to increase capacity. The installations discharge the cleaned water to the sea and part of it is reused. Most wastewater comes from residential areas and hotels.

Chanutthaphong says local officials have increased awareness of the importance of the environment to bring about a change of mindset among Thais, but that will only have an effect in the long term.

You have to be crazy to go into the sea in Pattaya.

If they filled your hotel pool with the seawater from Pattaya you probably wouldn't be splashing in it.
Quite apart from the question of whether the sewer is also connected to it.
So why would you do that when you're at the beach?

We were here January/February. Even in South Jomtien, at the newest hotels the sea water was so terribly dirty and so much rubbish that we could not get further than paddling.

They have to start purifying the water now, especially for the marine life there. Other than that it is great to live here.

Recently read a discussion, whether or not the beach is full of waste such as plastic and garbage.
Sitting on a terrace do you eat or not exhaust fumes?
Is the seawater polluted or not, or is it bad for your health?
According to a Pattaya resident / connoisseur, it's not too bad, right?
I'm going to Khanom again next year and a few weeks to Pathui.
There the beach is kept clean by the local population, students and farangs.
Fishermen and the population informed how harmful the pollution is to nature and health.

Now if only the overhead starts tackling those who are the culprits in this.
But also very large fines to be handed out to those responsible.
No, better not fines, because that makes no sense, we all know.
    Just straight to some cell.
And, if repeated, to purchase a permit or boat.
What about those "tig" speed boats for any sport whatsoever.
They really don't come to the beach with a plastic bag to throw it Keurig in a waste bin.
go. over the edge and you're lost too.

For the larger ships, a task for the coastguard is ready.
An oil track is enormously long and those large ships need a few sea miles to come to a stop
and can therefore also make a donation to the Thai fund.
These ships also contribute significantly to pollution.

    But let's be honest.
The most important thing is to make the Thai aware that they cannot throw everything behind them or across the street.

We were in Phuket last month; unfortunately we also had to swim through a veil of plastic before we came into open water. Bah! We lay on Karon and Kata beach among the empty Russian beer bottles, butts and packs of cigarettes. Of course you will have a few who clean up their mess, but most just left it alone. A huge difference from the way we were raised in the past. Our dear mother gave us all the thunder if we dropped a piece of chewing gum. I would be so ashamed to leave such traces. My butts disappear in my empty Leo cans, which we then take with us in a garbage bag to the container.

In my opinion, the gigantic amount of boats, speedboats, jet skis, etc. also cause a lot of pollution. We were on Koh Samet in 2005 and then it was still a paradise. Last year we were on Koh Samet again and Koh Samet has become a big dirty dump with the noise of dozens of black smoking boats around you.

And besides the sewers, the enormous amounts of rainwater falls of the past few days will of course also take a lot of dirt into the sea.

I can only say how sorry I am about this. I hope they will find a solution for it.

Until about 10 years ago I remember that Phuket was not too bad ...... it is therefore sad to hear that things are going in the wrong direction there too.

Last month we were in Sam Roi Yot, which is a nature park near Hua Hinn…..and although it was much better there, we think it was not very neat there either, and that even in a nature park…..Also there on the beach junk. It's very sad when you see that.

The sea water at Pattaya was already dirty in 1991, but then came from Bangkok and of course the "rain" water from inland at Pattaya.

I first came to Pattaya in 1977. There was already a large drain pipe sticking into the sea from the Dusit Thani hotel. At that time there was already pollution of the sea and for swimming we went to Bang Sean from now on. Then was a quiet and calm place with clean water. Seems to be different now.

Recently I was in Bang Saen………I stayed on that beach for 5 minutes….one big rubbish dump….Thais are having a great time…apparently they like it so they can also throw their junk on top……apparently they see It doesn't or it doesn't seem to bother them at all..

      • theos says up

Gosh, Fred, that scares me. I came to Bang Saen a lot back then, in the 70s, the beach was clean then with tables and chairs and you could swim there. There was a large building with shower cubicles where you could shower after swimming. What a shame that it is so dirty now. There was also a monkey rock where we went to look. Plus some sacred Buddha and Chinese temples and monks. A must for my wife.

Without wanting to provoke a discussion whether they are Thai or farang (both I assume) I do want to note that the culture in Thailand is such that you just leave your mess. With one exception, they don't care one bit. They're just never taught about it. And where they are not Thai or farang tourists, there are Thai fishermen. Because really everything they no longer need just goes overboard. Of course, 7-11 also contributes to handing out plastic bags for everything, as if it were a roll of Mentos. And no Thai who will refuse it for environmental reasons.

I also found it funny to read that apparently there are people who go to Pattaya and the surrounding area for the beach and sea. I never knew that.

From Pattaya you can see Laem Chabang from different places. In one of my posts I wrote that seagoing vessels were cleaned there after unloading their cargo. With a wrong wind direction, Pattaya also has to deal with this pollution! The Navy has been instructed to act against this. So far people are not very impressed with this measure!
