'A nightmare for every traveler'

Suppose you are many thousands of miles away from home in Thailand and you receive a message that a family member is in urgent need of help ziekenhuis is included, in short, a nightmare for every traveler.

It happened to me once already. I woke up, looked at my phone and saw some missed calls and messages. To my horror I read disturbing reports from the home front. Then I decided to wake up my daughter.

She had no more information at that point and I had to wait until I could get hold of someone else in my family. Meanwhile, all sorts of thoughts were running through my head. Should I start packing my suitcase? Adjust my itinerary? What if…?

I canceled my appointments for that day and started calling around. After a while I got clarity. Although the first messages sounded very serious, I was somewhat reassured. The patient was in good hands at the hospital and is doing well given the circumstances.

It is precisely at such moments that you realize how important a good Travel Insurance is. Many people think that travel insurance is nothing more than insurance for your luggage. But that's actually the least important coverage. The usefulness of travel insurance becomes especially visible when you need help, the so-called SOS coverage.

If I would like to, a phone call to the emergency center of my travel insurer is sufficient to ensure that I can fly back to the Netherlands as quickly as possible. They arrange everything, provide transport, a ticket (if necessary business class if the economy class is full) and I can return quickly.

This also applies the other way around. If I were to be hospitalized in Thailand with serious complaints, my family would be flown directly to Thailand at the expense of the insurer and of course the hospital costs would also be paid in full. If necessary, my travel insurer issues a payment guarantee, so that treatment can start immediately; no precious time should then be lost.

I also have a so-called 'agent clause' on my policy. If my partner cannot work in the Netherlands, suppose he breaks an arm, then I will be flown back to Schiphol directly at the expense of my travel insurer.

In my opinion, travel insurance is useful. There are covers that are not reimbursed under any other insurance, such as repatriation costs, costs for rescue and search, and assistance by the specialists of the emergency center.

A reassuring thought for me when I live on the other side of the world.

I have never looked at travel insurance like this before.

Well arranged if it happens to you!

Fortunately, we also have good travel insurance. In case of an emergency, we can contact you and everything will be neatly arranged. The body will also be brought to the Netherlands in the event of death. pay.But you can never say that nothing young or old happened to me it can only be over.

This happened to me too but just the other way around. i was on holiday in jomtien and had been suffering from arrhythmias for 3 years that were well controlled with medication.
was on the waiting list in the Netherlands for an ablation in Eindhoven, but went on holiday with a friend of mine after a year without complaints. my wife is not going because the flight is too stressful for her due to severe back problems.
after 3 days fate struck and had a heart rate of 180, so to Bangkok Hospital in Pattaya and I was admitted there and treated immediately. Contacted my health insurance and my travel insurance and then back to hotel. 2 days later a second cardiac arrhythmia and then the insurance was no longer allowed to fly on medication so had to stay there for an ablation.
Had to inform the home front and then everything was set in motion for the treatment. all costs were reimbursed to the last penny by the companies which I was very happy with. think not only of arranging transport home, but also extra accommodation costs for hotel food and drinks, canceled excursions, telephone costs and, for example, taxi costs to the bankok airport and from schoiphol to home. luckily there were no worries about that.
am really grateful to the insurance companies for arranging everything and reimbursing the expenses incurred. (OZF and Centraal Beheer Achmea)
what I would also like to say about this is the expertise and the great care of the xiekebhuis in Pattaya. was a bit hesitant at first but that was completely unnecessary. hope if I get heart problems again, that I will be in Thailand again, hats off to employees in the hospital.
by the way, go back for a check-up every year at the request of the cardiologist.
once again good insurance is worth its weight in gold

    Travel insurance is often underestimated.
A shame because they are certainly not expensive!!!
My sister's mother died and she was able to fly back with her travel companion. And idd first class for both, remainder of the holiday was also reimbursed, also for both.
Even in kk with blind sarm 4 days in hospital everything reimbursed !!.

This only applies to holidaymakers with travel insurance!

If you live in Thailand and you receive a call from your former home country because of problems, all costs are for your own account.
Hope that at that time the passport is in order with a re-entry for Thailand!

If necessary, you can get that re-entry permit at Suvarnabhumi when you leave.

Hope you think of that in all the consternation!

That in itself is true, thank you!

Just opened the account for the annual renewal of my annual travel insurance policy. For a premium of 53 euros per year, I have worldwide coverage, a maximum travel time of 365 days, extra medical costs including possibly. repatriation, etc. etc.
All in all one euro per week, so you don't have to leave it for the costs. Also, pay attention to the maximum travel time when taking out: there are often restrictions to a consecutive travel time of 3 or 6 months. Take a good look at what you need.

Hopefully people will not abuse it so that it remains affordable for everyone.

I am insured with TOURING. I have been to Thailand many times. We do volunteer work in the province of Udon Thani.

Last time I was there a heavy metal gate fell on me. Ambulance in and to Wattana hospital. Called the travel insurance there. I had 4 pelvic fractures and a broken shoulder. The travel insurance has arranged everything. After a few days Wattana with private plane to Bangkok. Accident on November 20, 2016 and with airfrance back to Paris on December 7. A doctor and nurse from Belgium accompanied me. By ambulance to hospital in Ostend. There surgery on shoulder and on December 23 to rehabilitation I BZIO. Finally home at the end of January. The insurance took care of everything and it didn't cost me a euro. Thank you TOURING. I advise everyone to take out such insurance. It is not expensive and the whole family is insured with it.

We were lucky that this accident during "volunteer work" is not excluded in the policy conditions!

Last year I received a phone call from Belgium that a number of things were going wrong in my business. I could not help with telephone consultation and there was no other option than to take the first plane to Belgium myself.
I had already paid for a flight out and back on set dates. So I had to buy an extra ticket to have a one-way flight to Brussels the next day. This was much more expensive than the first ordered double flight. I was home in 24 hours.
Although I had taken out insurance when booking a Cheaptickets flight, they did not intervene and I had to pay for everything myself. The reason was that it was not a medical emergency.

    • Yes, it's strange that not everything is paid for by your travel insurance. Really very strange….

I also travel or have traveled quite a lot and have never taken out travel insurance. I think it's silly to spend money on something you hope will never happen. You should dare to take a chance in your life. And if it does happen, we'll see.

    • Cornelis says up

If you extend that view, you can cancel all insurance policies, I think. Are you really that consistent?

    • ann says up

That is why travel insurance will soon also be mandatory in Thailand, among others

  13. Henri says up

Dear Lung Theo, only silly people think it's silly not to travel irresponsibly.
Have known a few, without health insurance and know a few more. In an emergency we will act pathetic, collect money through crowdfund campaigns, because then we have to go back to the homeland, with an excellent social safety net. My verdict is, you are anti-social if you let others pay for the costs that you could have avoided with your own investment….
