You are studying or working temporarily in Thailand. What about your Dutch health insurance? Sometimes you can keep your health insurance, but not always. And how do you ensure that you are also insured for emergency care abroad before 2025?
Unexpected problems with Belgian travel insurance for 95-year-old father in Thailand
My 95-year-old father is staying in Thailand for a long time, but his Belgian insurer Ethias suddenly refuses coverage and has cancelled his policy. After years of loyal payment without claims, he is now left without insurance, forcing us to look for alternatives in Thailand. Unfortunately, these appear to be unaffordable and almost impossible to arrange due to his age.
Renting a scooter during your holiday in Thailand is of course fun, but there are some serious snags. For example, a scooter in Thailand has a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cc (often 125 cc) and is therefore a motorcycle. You must have a valid motorcycle license to drive it. There are also quite a few points of attention with regard to insurance, so your travel insurance NEVER covers damage to (rented) vehicles.
Thailand is taking new steps to improve the safety of foreign tourists with a comprehensive insurance plan. This initiative, proposed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, provides significant accident coverage, up to 500.000 baht for injured people and 1 million baht in case of death. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the development of a policy to cover all tourists, as part of a strategy to promote Thailand as a safe travel destination.
When traveling to Thailand: this is how you prepare well
Are you planning a trip to Thailand? You have probably already started preparing. However, travelers and adventurers sometimes forget to take the challenging Eastern climate into account.

Allianz is not allowed to terminate travel insurance of a sick customer in Thailand
A sick insured of Allianz Global Assistance, who has been staying in Thailand for years, is still entitled to reimbursement of medical costs that he claims from the insurer. Allianz wrongly terminated the man's travel and cancellation insurance, on the grounds that they were staying abroad for more than 180 days. This is what the complaints institute KiFiD says.
When I first read about the aforementioned possibility to obtain the required insurance statement for Thai immigration last week, I was still skeptical. However, after being reported on TB again yesterday, I became curious and asked Allianz for more information.
Reader question: Medical insurance for Thailand
I want to go back to Thailand for 3 months in October, the conditions state that you must take out “medical insurance” with a minimum amount of $ 100.000, which must then be specifically stated in this policy. I have searched on Google and checked the advice for Thailand, but can only take out insurance for 1 year, as far as I know.
Do you have experience with insurance coverage as far as COVID is concerned? Is it better to take out a (more expensive) local insurance policy that has less coverage for the rest of the costs?
There has been quite a bit of fuss on social media lately about Coris' insurance policy. We at AA Insurance also offer this policy so I think it would be good to clear up any misunderstandings.
Reader question: Experience with CORIS travel and health insurance?
Does anyone have experience with CORIS travel and health insurance. The prices are very affordable for health insurance. Please comment if it is a good option.
I have been staying in Thailand since March 2, 2020. My travel accident insurance with VAB via KBC expires on March 1, 2021. I will stay in Thailand until May 31, 2021. It is impossible to extend with VAB via KBC. I have to be in Belgium for that.
Who knows if I can take out travel insurance somewhere that does provide coverage during this period? Doesn't necessarily have to be Dutch. I want damage during my trip/stay to be covered as well as possible medical costs in case of illness or hospitalisation.
Thailand visa application No. 133/20: COVID-19 insurance
The embassy requires insurance that specifically covers against Covid-19. I have a continuous travel insurance with AXA, which covers up to 3 million euros repatriation and all other necessities in case of medical problems. At that company itself I get answers from sure we will cover you if you get sick until normally yes. But that is of course not specifically mentioned anywhere, only illness and medical costs.
I plan to go to Thailand (Isaan) again for half a year at the beginning of next year, provided that things have largely returned to normal.
I am looking for a good and reliable travel insurance, especially for illness and accidents, etc.
I live in Chiang Mai, but I am registered in NL. I pay my health insurance there, and I have additional travel insurance, FBTO Reis Perfect Polis. My question now is, when you travel out and come back to Thailand, there is talk about a (mandatory?) insurance of 100k US$, is my travel insurance sufficient, or do I have to take out a 3rd insurance policy, if so, where?
Consumers Association: Travel insurance via travel organization too expensive and bad conditions
According to the Consumers' Association, it is better not to take out travel and cancellation insurance with a travel organization when booking a trip or flight tickets online. The price is too high and the coverage is often worse. Conditions also appear to be unclear. The Consumers' Association investigated the policy conditions of 15 travel providers.
Compulsory travel insurance for foreign visitors will most likely be introduced next year. Although Bangkok Post talks about travel insurance, it is actually accident insurance, because it only pays out in the event of death as a result of an accident. The premium will be 20 baht, according to the Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC).
'A nightmare for every traveler'
Suppose you are many thousands of kilometers away from home in Thailand and you receive a message that a family member has been urgently admitted to hospital, in short, a nightmare for every traveler.
