A KLM plane at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok (KITTIKUN YOKSAP / Shutterstock.com)

Due to the Covid19 virus, I and my family were unable to fly from Bangkok to Amsterdam at the beginning of 2020 due to flight restrictions.

At the time I decided to apply for vouchers, to use KLM again at a later date to fly. I was convinced that the virus would disappear after a few months. Unfortunately, another wave of this virus broke out in December 2020 and the end is not yet in sight.

At the end of December 2020, I decided to apply for financial compensation for the vouchers. After my first request, in which I indicated that I had paid for the tickets by credit card, I received a message back from KLM after 3 days that the request will not be processed. The reason was that in case of a refund, they could only pay back the money through my bank account. I was asked to resubmit the application, now stating that the tickets were paid through my bank account + the details of that account. I resubmitted the application on December 29, but with the feeling that I was being held on a leash by KLM. On January 8, I received the happy news that KLM will transfer the total amount to my bank account.

My gut feeling was wrong and I would like to thank KLM for the smooth service.

You must thank the Dutch and French governments who provided almost 2020 billion euros in state aid in June 11, otherwise KLM-Air France would have gone into liquidation and you would be left empty-handed. The bad news is that this aid must be repaid, which will make airline tickets considerably more expensive.

I have already canceled two trips to Bangkok, both flights booked with Gate 1 and flying with Lufthansa.
received a voucher both times but submitted a request for a refund. Within 3 days a reply from Gate 1 and a few days later money was refunded to my account.
      before.
made another attempt to book for November, cheaper than the canceled flight in February.

What email address did you email to?
    Sincerely Martin

That's right Luc that KLM is considerably more expensive, just booked a ticket for Bangkok Amsterdam and pay 550 euros at Lufthansa. KLM was 932 euros without luggage. Ridiculous. The one-way ticket to Amsterdam Bangkok in October was also 785 euros via the embassy. No more KLM for me.

Recently saw a one-way ticket with EVA from Amsterdam to Bangkok for 600 Euro, this is a comparable price as with KLM for a single trip. Yes, with Lufthansa you pay about 300 Euro for a one-way trip and Lufthansa also does repatriation of Thais.
Yes EVA also flies with a frequency of 2x per month for repatriation of Thais, the next flight is on January 16.
I myself have a ticket from Lufthansa in May from Amsterdam to Bangkok, which costs me 560 euros return, I also checked with KLM and that was about 100 euros more expensive in May. I am sure that Lufthansa flies every day and I think it also has to do with a large home area that they cover, namely Germany with 80 million inhabitants, as well as Austria and Switzerland, while KLM has to make do with a home market of 17 million. With KLM you cannot be sure whether they fly because as long as no tourists return, the demand for a KLM ticket remains limited, resulting in no KLM flights.

I disagree with you Ger Korat. Passengers who travel to Thailand come from all over Europe and also outside Europe and not just from the Netherlands and the ticket prices are cheaper than buying in the Netherlands, so that kite does not work as you claim.

tickets are getting more expensive? That remains to be seen. There is sufficient competition from airlines that have less of that problem. So if KLM wants to stay in the air then….

It may well be that China airlines will fly to Europe via Bangkok again to fill their planes.

    Interesting.
Last year I had KLM tickets that were paid through both the bank account and the credit card.
When applying for a refund, it was therefore necessary to indicate how the tickets had been paid for, and the money would be refunded in the same way – and that is how it happened. Money on account and money on credit card; also of tickets that could initially only be converted into vouchers. Everything simply via the KLM website, without the intervention of the office.

And whether it will soon become (more) expensive to fly: the market of supply and demand will partly determine that. But 550 euros for a return is of course ridiculous/relatively little – that is converted to 1210 guilders. In 1990 I already paid more than 1300 guilders for a budget flight to Bangkok with Pakistan IA. There will probably be more examples of things that have also become cheaper in 31 years, but it won't be much. Train and car, for example, do not. Have a nice Sunday!

Martin, go ahead http://www.aviclaim.nl My BKK-AMS flights booked via Vliegreizen.nl were cancelled. Finally got home but had to pay for that flight again. KLM referred me to Vliegreizen.nl for the refund, but shamefully enough they did not answer. Aviclaim.nl turned on after months and money back within 3 weeks after deduction of 20% commission. Return by KLM to Avivlaim!

We ourselves have used our ticket (voucher) for the 3rd time. Now as departure date 28 October to 25 November.
All three times of rebooking perfectly helped by KLM customer service.
For us, therefore, nothing but praise for KLM

Our experiences with KLM are less positive. After KLM canceled our flights in December 2020 in September 2020, I applied for a refund of the ticket prices paid on September 26, 2020.
KLM made the repayment on January 4, 2021, more than three months later.

Always had positive experiences with KLM, the last time my canceled flight was refunded to my AMEX within 3 weeks. Kudos!

Of course we're glad she refunded your money, but I don't understand why this couldn't be done via your credit card? Maybe too high costs? Or too many complaints via credit card insurance, after which they discourage the use of credit cards? Or ???
