Dear Editor/Ronny,

Due to the new law, every expat must have health insurance (minimum 400.000 baht) with new annual visa application.

Now my question, is there really no affordable insurance for this amount (400.000 to 500.000 baht for hospitalization) I assume that many expats with a family just cannot cough up 250 to 300 euros per month?

Greetings,

Ludo

Dear ludo,

This requirement only exists with the Non-immigrant “OX” visa.

“1.7 Applicants must have Thai medical insurance during their stay in Thailand (per the approval of the Office of Insurance Commission) and medical claims for outpatient must not be less than 40,000 Baht, for inpatient must not be less than 400,000 Baht”

www.thaiembassy.org/hague/th/services/81359-Non-Immigrant-Visa-OX-(Long-Stay).html

This visa cannot be obtained by Belgians. Dutch people do.

The financial requirements are also not small.

There is no such requirement for the regular annual extensions of the period of residence based on “Retired” or “Thai Marriage”. At least not last week when I went.

I have not yet heard from the embassies or consulates that they now also have this requirement when applying for a visa. As far as I know there is no new law about that either. There was talk of that last year, but I have not heard anything more about it.

But what isn't can come in the future of course.

But if it's a new law I don't know about, you can always send me the reference. Of course I could always have missed something.

Regards,

RonnyLatYa
