Questioner: Philip

I have a retirement visa for the last 2 years. Now I have to go back to Belgium for an operation, but my visa ends on October 18. Is it still worth getting a re-entry stamp, since I will still have to apply for a new visa when I return to Thailand (married with children)?

A "Re-entry" aims to keep the end date of your last obtained stay period when you leave Thailand. When you return, you will not receive a new period of stay, but again the end date of the last period of stay obtained.

You have to come back before that end date, because a “Re-entry” only keeps that end date but does not extend it. If you fail to re-enter Thailand before the end date, that period of stay will also expire, just like your “Re-entry”.

In your case, you will have to re-enter Thailand before October 18. If you already expect that this will not work, it makes no sense to request a “Re-entry”. That would be a useless expense.

You will indeed have to start all over again, ie with a period of stay obtained with a Non-immigrant visa.

Good luck with the surgery and a speedy recovery.
