Curious about Lex's report on Klein Vlaanderen, my wife and I decided to take a look at the new address on January 4, 2109. Finally, we had delicious meals on the Second Road several times.

Well, it was really not difficult for us to find, because if you step right outside the Belgian Dre's bar on Soi Buakhao, you will walk into the dead end street after 10 meters.

An acquaintance of ours had previously stayed at Malee 3, so we knew where that was. About 50 meters left before Klein Vlaanderen, which is almost at the end on the right. And we have to agree with Lex, the name Malee in the orange part was really unreadable. We knew from the past where it should be on that signboard. The only thing that came across clearly was the number 3, now shown in black, but then the 3 before the word Russian.

My wife and I went to check it out around 19pm. Unfortunately, not a single customer. We like a bit of commotion, so we decided to check it out later, back to Dre's bar. At 00:20 pm again to Klein Vlaanderen, where the commotion had not yet booked a table. Two men sat at the bar and one at a table. No, that bites and doesn't go in well, so we couldn't experience what Lex's steak tasted like. But we will certainly give it a try soon, but without commotion.

I hope for the owner and his co-workers that this evening was an exception. Located on the Second Road, hundreds of potential customers walked by every day. And then there were the necessary people who had been coming for years. Passers-by will not be here, except for the few Thai people who park their car in the parking lot 15 meters away.

Incidentally, not only the address has changed, but also the name, which is now: NEW Flanders.

'Nieuw Vlaanderen' is Charlie's former 'Mai Lu Si Bar'. That was a Belgian and he died in October 2017.
The current manager is said to be Peter's brother, who owned the former Klein Vlaanderen on Second Road. At least that's what I heard. Then the name Nieuw Vlaanderen is quickly linked, of course.

It is true that the current manager is a brother of Peter who used to run Klein Vlaanderen. By the way: you can eat very well, every dish is very well cared for and tasty. The rooms are also top notch.
And by the way: when I'm going to eat somewhere, I prefer a quiet place to a lot of noise.

Yes, no wonder there was no commotion in the tent, if you make a leap into the future of 90 years at once, then that is also difficult to predict. Incidentally, we wish you a good and healthy 2019 and go one of these days back to see or perhaps also to eat

    Dear Mr Joop,
Please respond to a review that isn't really a review.
    – New Flanders is not the old Little Flanders; family: both owners are brothers.
    – The location is indeed remote and we do not want to deal with the hundreds or thousands of tourists along the beach road. This automatically results in regularly calm hours.
    – The location was deliberately chosen because of the rooms we rent out. Within a year we added a second building (two houses away) to be able to offer more rooms. The quiet, yet central location is very pleasant for hotel guests, which results in 100% occupancy of the rooms and a rating of 9.1 on booking.com and 5 stars on Tripadviser.
    – November was so busy that we hired an extra chef in December... but unfortunately December and early January fell short of expectations. Not only at Nieuw Vlaanderen, but at almost all catering establishments in Pattaya. Of course there are the established names who always have their clientele due to their fame and location.
    – We rely on our regular clientele, people who live here or regularly come here for a longer period of time and of course the hotel guests.
    – Fortunately, bookin.com only accepts reviews from people who actually stayed at the hotel and did not walk past or enter because it looked deserted.
    – If you happen to be in Pattaya on January 13 (next Sunday), you are cordially invited to the 1-year anniversary of Nieuw Vlaanderen. Free buffet.

I've been there three times this winter. This in response to this blog. The food was very well prepared and very tasty. In addition, you will be asked by the patron how exactly you want your steak prepared. A strong recommendation. Moreover, a very quiet setting, away from the overcrowded and unhealthy (air) Soi Buakhao. I'm definitely going back.

Dear Ed, thanks for the clear explanation, well done.
I think that you have made many expats here curious. At least I have, come and eat sometime.

    • Ed says up

Hi Lunghan. If you're in the area this Sunday…welcome to the 1 year anniversary.

I happened to have dinner there for the first time on New Year's Eve and I don't regret it. The steak was indeed very tasty and cooked as requested and the pepper sauce was also as it should be, not Thai style, the croquettes were also very tasty. It was also quiet that night, but that doesn't mean anything. They will definitely see me there! Also had a pleasant conversation with the owner.

Okay, I sometimes came to Klein Vlaanderen, but it had disappeared in one go last year.
But hasn't Peter opened a new business himself or has he returned to Belgium?
When I come back next time I will eat there

    • Ed says up

My brother Peter has rented out his business and is retired in Pattaya now.

      • RonnyLatYa (formerly RonnyLatPhrao) says up

There is also a third brother who has (or had) a business, I thought.

        • Ed says up

Indeed. Swa has the Look Out Inn bar in Center Condo. Free pool and snooker and delicious soups. His chicken soup and goulash soup are especially popular.

I got to know both when they were still in Soi 1, including the parrot.
Must have been 94 I think.
I personally didn't know Swa that well, but I did know Pee. It's been a long time since I've seen him.
I used to come to Pattaya on leave a lot and visited him regularly.
Soi 1 maybe a little less (it was a bit further away), but very regularly since he moved the business to Second Road over the Lek Hotel. Later he moved further from there towards the intersection.

If I ever visit Pattaya again (when?) I will visit you. I always go along the Dré, so that's just around the corner.
By the way, I still had a room there for a few days when your predecessor, Charlie, was still alive. Remind me that the rooms were spacious.

In any case, good luck with the case. I have been reading for a year now.

    Welcome.

put it on a map here and on google. I can't find it (stay in Jomtien)

    • Ed says up

You can find all the info on the facebook page: Nieuw Vlaanderen Pattaya
It's quite easy to find if you know Soi Buakaow. The street opposite Pattaya City Hospital. There is a motorbike shop on both corners of the street.
Malee 3 is at the beginning of the street on the left and Nieuw Vlaanderen at the end of the street on the right.
Sunday evening 1 year anniversary with free continuous buffet.

If my reader submission could lead to more (regular) customers, that would be a nice effect, also because I am already seeing commitments. In addition, I sense a positive outlook by Ed. And of course it is wonderful to see how people write about New Flanders on Booking.com and Tripadvisor.

I have not tried to write a review, we have not eaten and / or stayed there, but to express an observation and an opinion.

And by the way: when I go out to eat somewhere I prefer “some commotion” to “a lot of noise”.

    • Ed says up

      Hi Joop,
It was not pleasant to read that my business is not running and many share this opinion. I have received quite a few personal comments. Nice to hear you didn't mean it wrong and I'm very pleased with the positive comments that followed your "observation". As I said before, Sunday is 1 year anniversary with free buffet. Welcome.
By the way: people talk very positively about my steak… our stew is also very popular.
      Regards,
      Ed
