Koh larn

I spent Christmas with friends on the island of Koh Larn. This is the busiest time of the year, so ferries are packed to the last place.

It is striking that everyone is obliged to put on a life jacket. You would almost believe that lessons have been learned from a recent accident. One can only hope that this is a permanent measure. But Thais remain Thais and that often means that there is no eye for dangerous situations.

When we approach the capital of the island, we can already see our hotel: Suntosa. It is a bed and breakfast establishment and I had always imagined it to be extremely simple. However, the rooms are all luxurious. My room has a sea view. The television has BVN and everyone can use their iPad or other toys via the given password.

In the immediate vicinity of the hotel are numerous restaurants and, of course, beautiful beaches to the left and right of the town. We find the most beautiful and quietest beach on the other side of the island. The same kind of taxis as in Pattaya, but roads that are exactly two taxis plus ten centimeters wide. Blazing hard on steep mountain roads. Breathtaking.

The nicest restaurant is highly recommended. As I've been told it's right around the corner from the hotel, I walk over to it, despite the fact that people who are even less mobile than me are transported by motorcycle taxi. I arrive exhausted. The restaurant is, I would almost say of course, by the sea. In large part, it is composed by raised squares, on which Thai customers simply sit on the floor. That's too much for us. Fortunately, there are also a few tables and chairs. For people who don't like fish there is of course the normal Thai cuisine, but for fish lovers it is an el dorado. All conceivable fish and shell dishes and all equally tasty. For me, the highlight is the soft crab, called Poo Nim in Thai. Recommended.

I don't know the name of the restaurant, but it's easy to find. From the town to the north walk along the sea. After the built-up area there will be an open country and beyond it lies the sea.
