The short tropical twilight that lasts barely half an hour before darkness sets in gives just enough view of the rice fields that are starting to dry out. Nowhere does water shine through and where people have not yet harvested the culms hang heavily, in some places they have even been blown flat by the wind that regularly blows this time of year.

There is not really much work, not a single construction site in the area and hardly even day laborers when harvesting, machines are now fully introduced because the price, five hundred baht per rai, is cheaper than the roughly thousand baht that three day laborers would receive for the same chore. There is a pleasant bustle in and around the village. Mopeds with sidecar and drive on and on, with might and main they move to the rice fields. The yellow-ripe grains hang promisingly on almost all paddies and spread that delicious saffron-like scent.

The Inquisitor has started blogging again, today the first of a series. He writes about his fourth winter in Isaan and that is the least 'harsh' to date. The first cold snap came in mid-December. From which The Inquisitor and sweetheart largely escaped due to an almost two-week trip to Pattaya, well, Nong Preu, partying with friends and acquaintances there. It was strange that it had been rainy there for about three days, a phenomenon that hadn't happened here in the countryside for a month or two.

Cats and dogs are kept as close together as possible, in all draught-free spots that can be found. Iguanas, snakes and other cold-blooded creatures move slowly, looking for the first morning sun to warm up. The Inquisitor and sweetheart wear a kind of slippers indoors, from some hotel, the cold floor tiles give an unpleasant feeling.
