When I used to eat Chinese food, I avoided rice because of the dry, flavorless grains. That changed when I met my Thai other half. We discovered Thai Pandan Jasmine rice, a fragrant and tender variety that completely changed my view of rice. But why do Dutch people often prefer the large, dry granules? Reader question: Growing rice near my house as a hobby

Purely for the hobby and fun I want to grow rice at home in a number of concrete rings with a diameter of 80 cm. In the meantime I have filled these concrete rings with sand from rice fields. I enriched the soil with cow manure and some other organic substances.

Jasmine Rice 105

The famed jasmine rice, the star of Thailand's grain exports, won a top prize at the World Rice Conference this month for the sixth time since 2009. The “Khao Dawk Mali 105” – a code name for the most famous Thai jasmine rice variety – beat rivals from Cambodia, China, the United States and Vietnam with “its combination of aroma, texture and taste,” said the jury of the annual Rice Suppliers Forum and policymakers.

Thailand exports less and less rice

Thailand risks losing its position as the world's second largest rice exporter this year. The Thai Rice Exporters Association expects Vietnam to take second place. This is due to higher production costs than the competitor, a lack of rice varieties to meet the changing market demand, unfavorable exchange rates and the drought.

There is a pleasant bustle in and around the village. Mopeds with sidecar and drive on and on, with might and main they move to the rice fields. The yellow-ripe grains hang promisingly on almost all paddies and spread that delicious saffron-like scent.
