A good way to get acquainted with Thai cuisine is a Food Court, for example that of Tesco. The food is of consistent quality, cheap and hygienically prepared.
Tesco Lotus is a supercenter or hypermarket group in Thailand, founded in 1998. It is a collaboration of the Thai Charoen Pokphand Group Lotus and the British retail giant Tesco. They sell everything from food and clothing to housewares, electronics and furniture.

Tesco Lotus' 2.000 stores have been sold to the CP Group for $10 billion (334 billion baht). The Charoen Pokphand Group is a Thai conglomerate based in Bangkok. It is Thailand's largest privately held company and one of the world's largest conglomerates, with operations in more than 30 countries and more than 300.000 employees.

You may have noticed, I see more and more Tesco Express stores popping up, often close to a Family Mart or 7-Eleven store. Hang Chat is a town with about 10.000 inhabitants. If you ignore the 7-Eleven (which is more of a mini market than a supermarket) there is one supermarket, the Tesco, just outside the town on highway 11. Easy for us, because that is on the "good side by Hang Chat. If we didn't have to make that goddamn U-turn twice for a visit, it would have been absolutely perfect.

Some laws in Thailand are difficult to understand. Perhaps the intention is figurable, but the execution is completely against all logic.

I am currently in Pattaya for an extended period of time. I do errands here and there. But it strikes me that especially Western groceries are more expensive here. The supermarket in Central Festival is quite pricey. Am I better off going to Big C? Tesco Lotus is also quite expensive I think?

Big C is taking Tesco Lotus to court
Big C is at odds with its main competitor Tesco Lotus. The hypermarket has launched a civil suit for unfair competition and is seeking 415 million baht in damages.
