Tesco is going to expand in Thailand
You may have noticed, I see more and more Tesco Express stores popping up, often close to a Family Mart or 7-Eleven store. The competition in that sector of convenience stores is apparently fierce, because even a few times I see where a Tesco Express appears, especially the nearby Family Mart disappears after a while.
The image that I have of more and more Tesco Express stores seems to be correct and does correspond to the strategy of the English Tesco Group. At a recent meeting in London that Tesco organized for analysts and investors under the name of Capital Markets Day, a presentation was made of still "untapped expansion opportunities" for the Group.
Thailand was mentioned because Tesco intends to expand the nearly 1600 stores in Thailand with another 750 new stores or supermarkets. There is enough space in urban areas for large supermarkets, but the vast majority of that expansion will surely consist of Tesco Express stores.
Good idea?

On the one hand it is a good thing, in those shops the hygiene is slightly better than on the market or the small shops at home, on the other hand it is a pity that all those shops at home are disappearing.
How are things with Aldi's plans to open stores in Thailand, has anyone heard anything about it.
https://bit.ly/2Y1q5kX
Dear Bert,
Aldi is not coming to Thailand. It was an April fools joke or fake news.
A similar message could already be read in 2015 on the “'German Thailand Blog”' SiamOnline.de
http://www.siamonline.de/vbb/showthread.php?4550-Aldi-in-Thailand.
I would think that the owner of CP would not accept that Aldi would threaten its profitability.
So Aldi is not coming, I think.
Also the biggest competitor BigC (now wholly in Thai hands) does the same with ”littleBigC” a rather strange term, but oh well.
Family is originally Japanese but has been taken over (partly or wholly) by the monstrously large Thai shopping mega company CENTRAN, so their nr.1 card is now valid. The same applies to the TOPS supermarkets, once set up in conjunction with the NL-AHOLD group. At least in BKk, FAMiliy is busy upgrading, nicer interior, seats, more instant-fast food and microwave meals, etc. AND the prices have gone up considerably. The older non-refurbished FAMily were franchisee/operator driven and I think they will be bought out/not renewed when their contract expires.
And then again, at least in BKK, there is competition from the JP AEON group, which operates ditto convenience stores like Tanjay (they all have an AEON ATM). And the rather unknown 108 stores have also joined Japan and are now together mat LAWSON (in JP the largest 7). How that shopping violence takes place in that distant Isaniè ed, where most forum readers live with their lady / no idea.
The real Thai phenomenon you see something going well and promptly it is copied 100 times, until at least 90 of them go bankrupt.
“LittleBigC” is unknown to me, I do know the “Mini BigC”.
Tesco and 7 Eleven are not the best supermarkets for expats
Il live in Udomsuk/Bangkok with 4 7-Elevens and a Tesco Lotus express
Bread is an almost daily problem / all depend on the worst supplier - FarmHouse
They prefer to deliver cakes and other shit.
And then to think about the often too young staff and tomboys / possibly many students.
Well, don't complain I would say but just to the alternative:
– another bakery (e.g. Yamazake, according to the website in BTS Udomsuk; other bakery in Mall Bangna)
– buy a lot of bread and then freeze it
– switch to rice: this is Thailand…….
Delifrance Thailand
what does it matter to you that young staff and tomboys work in a self-service supermarket? You're not going to buy a car or get mortgage advice, are you? At AH you almost only come across young boys and girls. Why would that be…. precisely the price of personnel, and the selling price of articles.
Boy oh boy one stop further from BTS Udomsuk to OnNut and you have a huge TescoLotus and other shopping spree. Who buys their bread in a 7Eleven? Do you stay at home all day sometimes?
Here where I live it is teeming with shops where you can buy bread. Including some I think Dutch from Tulip Bakery. Still, I always buy my bread at the 7-Eleven. I like the Farm House bread in the green bags the best.
Invest once in a good bread baking machine and you will have fresh bread every day and even tastier too.
Hans
Never a problem with us, not with BigC and not with 7/11 and not with MaxValue.
Always brown bread available.
Tesco & 7-Eleven are both from CP.
Tesco is really not from CP.
Would like CP, but is not happening (for the time being).
Tesco Thailand brings in a lot of money for Tesco UK.
Makro is from CP, just like 7/11.
Little Big C has already given up on Maarten in two places in Khon Kaen.
Macro of CP ? I think it is still from the Dutch SHV,
The Coal Trade Association.
No, sold years ago to CP: https://www.thailandblog.nl/nieuws-uit-thailand/cp-wil-makro-thailand-overnemen/
That's right
was first 51/49 SHV but they have sold their share.
now has 1 owner.
tesco was 51% of CP. about 5 years ago Tesco England sold the rest of the shares to CP. Tesco England needed cash in England.
Not nice Gerrit! Why can't Tomboys work at Tesco!?
As mentioned above, but confirmed here via an email from Aldi Germany :::vielen Thank you for your email.
