Joseph has his own opinion when it comes to bodily adornments. Traditions, good or bad, often go very far back in time and that also applies to copper rings around your neck, stretched earlobes, tattoos and even a lot of rituals within the different religions, to which he also includes Buddhism. He wonders if we have the right to condemn that.

Long necks in Thailand

The Hill Tribes are mainly known from the 'Red Long Neck Caries'. This tribe, refugees from Burma, lives in small villages in the jungle. For beauty reasons, some women have about fifteen heavy copper rings around their necks, creating a stately giraffe appearance. Only girls born with a full moon are eligible.

We plan to travel from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son to see the Long Necks and hill peoples there. Now everyone advises us against this because you have to travel 10 hours through a terribly winding road. It would be very touristy and not worth it.

Today on the road between Chiang Rai and Mae Chan I saw a Long Neck, Karen Village sign. Went there to take a look. However, it turned out that an entrance fee of 300 Bath per person was requested. No ticket could be issued either. So I left quickly.

Now I knew that efforts had been made by the local government to give the 'Hilltribe' a protected status and to allow the children to enjoy compulsory education.
