After a long renovation of the building, the Baan Hollanda Information Center in Ayutthaya has finally reopened.

In my rather extensive collection of historical maps, plans and engravings of Southeast Asia, there is a nice map 'Plan de la Ville de Siam, Capitale du Royaume de ce nom. Leve par un ingénieur françois en 1687.' In the corner of this fairly accurate Lamare map, at the bottom right of the harbour, is the Isle Hollandoise - the Dutch Island. It is the place where 'Baan Hollanda', the Dutch House in Ayutthaya, is now located.

I admit it: I finally did it…. In all my years in Thailand I may have visited Ayutthaya twenty times but Baan Hollanda always fell outside the window of these visits for one reason or another. This in itself is quite bizarre. After all, the readers who read my articles on this blog know that the activities of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, better known as the (VOC), can count on my undivided attention in these parts for a long time.

The Dutch embassy reports on Facebook that Baan Hollanda, the information center in Ayutthaya about the history of Dutch-Thai relations, is open to visitors again. The location is on the exact location where the VOC built its first trading post in 1630.

Baan Hollanda takes you back to earlier times

On a sunny and hot Wednesday afternoon, Emma Kraanen visited 'Baan Hollanda' in Ayutthaya. On the banks of the Chao Phraya River and adjacent to a beautiful old shipyard, she found an inviting, warm orange Dutch building. The museum about Dutch-Thai relations in Thailand is a gift from Queen Beatrix to King Bumiphol.

As part of the EU Heritage Days, the historic Baan Hollanda in Ayutthaya will be open to the public on September 15 and 16. Baan Hollanda was originally the location of the Dutch trading office in the Ayutthaya kingdom in the 17th century and today it serves as an information center about the historical relationship of Thailand and Holland.

The Dutch museum Baan Hollanda in Ayutthaya has been open to the public for several years. The information center about the Netherlands provides insight into the shared history such as the VOC period from 1604, when Siam started trading with the Netherlands. But in Baan Hollanda you will also encounter current topics such as an exhibition about modern water management in both countries.
