Chiang Mai

In this new series on Thailandblog, we will highlight various cities in Thailand with text and especially images. A selection of defining and iconic photos will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Today the Rose of the North in other words Chiang Mai. This provincial capital is located about 700 km north of Bangkok between mountains. The Ping River flows through the city. Those who visit Chiang Mai will be amazed at the contrast with Bangkok. There is a relative calm in Thailand's second most important city.

Chiang Mai, literally new city, was chosen in 1292 by King Mengrai to replace Chiang Rai as the capital of his Lanna kingdom. Under Mengrai, the city became an important base of Theravada Buddhism. During his reign and that of King Tilok, beautiful temples were built in the walled historic city.

There are many reasons why thousands of tourists come to the Rose of the North every year, the nature is beautiful and it has become a center for handicrafts, umbrellas, jewelry (mainly silver) and woodcarving.

Major attractions include:

  • Doi inthanon national park
  • Wat chedi luang
  • Doi suthep
  • The Old Town
  • Sunday walking street
  • Chiang Mai Zoo

Chiang Mai is best visited from June to January. In the dry months from February to May, the air quality is very poor, mainly due to forest fires and farmers burning crop residues. The air is then so polluted by smog and particulate matter that it is hazardous to the health of humans and animals.

    Betse Editorial,

    Beautiful pictures
I hope people can say more about this in terms of culture in Chiang Mai.
I've been to Chiang Mai twice but haven't been able to see everything.

For many it would be great to comment on the photos (experience).

    I'm curious!
    Yours faithfully,

    Erwin
