Soi Cowboy Bangkok (video)
In Bangkok there are a number of red light districts that are popular with foreign tourists, Self Cowboy is one of them.
The street is about 300 meters long and is located between Sukhumvit Road Soi 21 (BTS station Asoke) and Sukhumvit Soi 23 in Bangkok. You can't miss it because you will find a lot of screaming neon advertising that has to praise the bars.
Soi Cowboy is the smallest 'red light district' in Bangkok. There are many stories about the origin of the name. The street is said to be named after an American cowboy who once opened the first bar there.
Until about 2001, this street was frequented by Western expats who wanted to avoid the busy Patpong and Nana Plaza, mainly visited by tourists. Since 2001, however, the area has become much more commercial. As a result, Soi Cowboy has also lost its old original atmosphere.
On the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 23 with Soi Cowboy, there used to be a Dutch brown café called 'The Old Dutch' that also served Dutch food and Belgian beers. Unfortunately this one is defunct.
Video: Soi Cowboy
Watch this video for an impression.
I first came to Soi Cowboy in 1976 and the original bar, called Cowboy, was still there. The bar was founded by an afro american and many Americans came then, I think from the bases that still had them here. There were only a few bars on this street and they were also much cheaper. In 1976 there was still Martial Law, there was a restraining order from 12 am to 4 am so the bars were open all night because people could not leave until after 4 o'clock in the morning. When the Americans left, the Cowboy Bar was sold and more and more bars, etc. were added. Enjoyed the video
The name Soi Cowboy was given by the American columnist, Bernhard Trink, who had a column at (then still existing) newspaper Bangkok World called Nightowl since 1962 or something like that. Called into the Cowboy bar. He wrote daily about what happened in bar life in Bangkok, hence the name,
Newspaper cost 3 baht. From him also comes the expression TIT, This is Thailand. He seems to be alive and about 85 years old. Google it, an interesting figure, doesn't speak a word of Thai, I can't learn, he says. Digress again.
I am the same as Theo. Another addition to my previous comments. Many American fighter pilots and bomber pilots also came to the Cowboy bar. These pilots also flew (perhaps still?) patrol over Europe and had an intermediate landing in Frankfurt, Germany. You could hitch a ride with them for free if you asked. I had to report at a certain time, don't remember where, Don Muang or U-Tapoa. Didn't go then because I was offered a demonstration on a Norwegian ship. For those who don't believe me, look at the year. There was no popular Internet and who had a computer? In any case, the name soi Cowboy comes from this bar, sorry I digressed but thought it would be a nice addition to the history of soi Cowboy.
Unfortunately, the fun is also defunct in soi Cowboy. What you name, you give me lady drink? Go, tequila gone and she gone too, don't give whiskey coke because then you often get two coupons, 1 coke and 1 whiskey, you will soon be at 10 euros per drink. Man, Bangkok is cheap, isn't it?
Yeah, I think you're screwed up in front of you
Still buy, last Saturday, a bourbon coke for 160 thb, 1 price, 1 glass
Street was full as usual and also with guests
At the location of Old Dutch you can now (appropriately?) buy your weed, legally
Those who still go to Bangkok just for the cheap sex will probably return from a bare journey. Paid sex is now cheaper in Europe.
I'm not talking about atmosphere and coziness.
Still a beautiful soi where you can look with pleasure at everything that belongs to it and at all passers-by and customers
There are several bars where you can sit and enjoy yourself without the hustle and bustle… of course those are not the many go-go's
You won't find the 'most beautiful' ladies there and the prices are affordable…
If you are bothered by the variety of ladies and their talk then you are in the wrong place…
