Thailand blog reader Ron posted a reader question about the DigiD on October 22: www.thailandblog.nl/ Readers Question/digid-ver Krijgen-ambassade/ According to Ron, it was possible to apply for and collect a DigiD in some Dutch embassies. This is important because otherwise people would have to go to the Netherlands because a DigiD would be sent to a home address in the Netherlands.

He also sent his question to the Dutch embassy in Bangkok and received a proper response from Ms F. Deveci, Deputy Head of Consular and Internal Affairs.

Dear Mr Ron,

A DigiD can be applied for at several embassies other than Paris, for example in Spain.

In the course of this month (November), it will be possible to apply for a DigiD at the embassy in Bangkok. Information about this will be posted on the embassy's website and Facebook page in the coming week.

I trust that I have informed you sufficiently.

Explanation DigiD

DigiD stands for Digital Identity and is a personal combination of a username and password. You use DigiD to identify yourself on the internet. This way organizations know that they are really dealing with you.

Many government organizations and organizations that perform a government task offer services with DigiD. For example:

  • national organizations (such as the Tax and Customs Administration, the Donor Register, the SVB and the UWV);
  • municipalities;
  • provinces;
  • regional water authorities;
  • Police;
  • hospitals, general practitioners, pharmacies;
  • health insurers.

The DigiD website contains a complete list of all organizations that are currently connected to DigiD.

With your personal DigiD you can, among other things, arrange the following things via the internet:

  • file a tax return;
  • apply for child benefit;
  • register in the Donor Register;
  • request services from your municipality, such as an extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP);
  • arrange matters related to your health insurance.

    FINALLY > Problem solved.
    It is too crazy for words that you have to go to Holland for that number.

    I am experiencing another problem with DigiD.
    Nowadays, among other things, health insurance is going to be insured with SMS control. The telephone number you must provide must be from a Dutch provider and you cannot use a Thai SIM card.
    Perhaps you can address this. I have already raised it with the health insurer and DigiD, but this cannot be resolved. You end up with high roaming costs and people who stay in Thailand for a long time have no use at all for a Dutch provider.

    Something about DigiD. Have had DigiD for some time and can use it to view “my SVB” without SMS.

    Requested both UNIVE and ABP for information about DigiD with SMS confirmation and each time received a very copied story back, but with the closing sentence “this does not apply to you”.

    Too stupid for words and therefore contacted the DigiD agency by telephone. I did my story and after some questions the following turned out:

    If you already receive state pension, simply request a (possibly new) DigiD with SMS code via the SVB site. Just searched but it worked. You must indicate that you live abroad and can then simply enter the Thai telephone number. I also had to provide my email address, and within a minute I received a confirmation ON MY THAI phone via SMS plus an email confirming that I will receive a new DigiD with SMS code. You must then activate this new DigiD within 30 days and, according to the e-mail, you can simply log in from Thailand at ABP and UNIVE.
    Probably all's well that ends well so it works!

    That is a very good message. You will probably have to go to the embassy in person, but that is a lot better than going to Schiphol.
    Thanks Ron
