Dear editors,

Last 5 months I did an internship in Bangkok. Now it looks like I can start working for this company next year after graduating.

I will of course apply for a work visa and work permit. My boyfriend is moving with me. What options does he have for a visa? Our first idea was that he would work as an English teacher, but with the stricter rules that they now want to enforce, that is probably not an option, because he does not have a bachelor's degree.

Is there any possibility for him to apply for a non-immigrant visa? And would it make any difference whether we are married or not?
Also with the future crack-down on tourist visas it doesn't seem possible to me that he can stay on a tourist visa.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Nynke

Dear Nynke,

Of course, a “friend” is not a legal relationship. A marriage or cohabitation contract is. I'm not entirely sure, but based on a legal relationship, I think someone can apply for a Non-Immigrant "O" (Multiple entry costs 140 Euro) to accompany their partner to Thailand. The partner must then be in order with everything, of course, in this case in order to work there.

The website of the consulate only mentions a Thai partner, but I think this also applies to the partner of a nationality other than Thai.

It is best to contact the Embassy/Consulate to confirm whether this is possible. You will probably also have to enclose the necessary documents with his application, which prove that you are going to work in Thailand for a certain company, and that you are in order with everything. It is best to ask which documents they want to see there. It may also be necessary for your relationship to be officially confirmed, but of course it is best to ask this first before taking any further steps (unless that planning had already been done, of course).

Let us know the result, because I personally have no experience with it, but it might help other readers who have a similar question.

Success.

Kind regards

RonnyLatPhrao
