Dear readers,

I live with my Thai girlfriend in the Netherlands and her children live in Thailand. Now I think it would be fun to go to Phuket with the children when we are in Thailand. So we fly from Bangkok to Phuket, a domestic flight.

I believe that the children should be in possession of a passport, my friend says that Thai residents can fly within Thailand with just their ID card.

Who's right?

Regards,

Ton

    Dear Ton,
3 years ago my wife and I also flew to Phuket, and my wife then asked on DonMuang what it takes to fly domestically, because of her family who do not have passports, and the answer was that flying for That with their ID card was possible.
We have not done this yet, but please ask an airline that flies to Phuket.
    regards Rob

It goes without saying that an ID card is sufficient!

It goes without saying that an ID card is sufficient as it concerns a domestic flight.

Thai citizens can even cross the border to Laos or Cambodia with their ID card.
I have done it often with Chaantje.

Domestic flight and Thai nationality, Thai aid is more than sufficient

    Your girlfriend's statement is correct.

A passport is an ID/document for international travel. It is internationally standardized.
An ID card is an identity document that you, as a resident, can use to prove just about everything.
For a domestic flight, a national of the country in which he or she resides does not need a passport, so a Thai can fly domestically with a Thai identity card.

    Dear people,

Thank you very much for your responses, which all give the same answer.
It is therefore not necessary to apply for passports and the children can come with us on their Thai ID cards. Nice to hear and important that if you have any doubts, you can share other people's experiences here to help others. This is the power of this website, which I have read daily since my first visit to Thailand in 1.

    Yours faithfully,

    Ton

ID card is enough. You don't pass passport control. You are Int Thailand and will stay in Thailand!!

I can speak from experience that children can even fly domestic flights with just the Birth Certificate. This was done last month due to an application for a Schengen visa and then a domestic flight while the Dutch embassy withheld the passport.
Flying with a Thai ID card is also fine.

Even I, as a farang, have flown domestically with my Thai driver's license. Checking into hotels is sometimes possible, but not always. Hotels sometimes want/need to check your visa or entry stamp.
