Murray Head, the English singer and actor, has already introduced the world to Bangkok's famous nightlife. In his 1984 hit, he sang “One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster”. Now stands Bangkok again in the top 10. And one of the cities with the best nightlife in the world.

Trendy discotheques and nightclubs

Bangkok has a lot to offer during the day, temples, markets, shopping malls, museums and much more. The nightlife in Bangkok is also varied and exuberant. If you think that it only concerns Beer and Gogo bars, then that is a misunderstanding. Bangkok can compete with all other major world cities in terms of nightlife and nightly entertainment. Hypermodern and trendy cafes, bars, nightclubs and discos abound.

A Thai massage will relax and energize you. After that you can of course go to a temple for enlightenment and a spiritual experience. Then plunge into the world of gastronomy and let yourself be pampered with a delicious meal in one of the many top restaurants in Bangkok. To burn the calories again, you can dance the night away in a hip discotheque or nightclub. Bangkok never gets boring.

Theater in Bangkok

Aren't you the wild type? Things are calming down Siam Niramit (www.siamniramit.com), located in the center of Bangkok. This state-of-the-art theater with 2.000 seats is open every day. The program includes the world's greatest theater productions. There are even three restaurants and an authentic Thai village in the complex. The visitors can take a walk through this village and enjoy the atmosphere of Thai life in ancient times.

Clearly strong American/English tinted frame. I myself have been able to taste the nightlife in 8 of these cities, plus in a lot of other cities worldwide, and in my opinion Asia is very poorly represented here. In many Asian cities, every night feels like Saturday night. And New Orleans at number 1??? Yes, right!

I know most of the cities from the list and missed Amsterdam. Amsterdam has always been No. 1 until I got to Pattaya.
Check out that Tripadvisor website for more interesting lists. Fortunately, Amsterdam is 5th in the list of Europe, although I think it should have been ahead of Berlin, Newcastle and Dublin.
There is no ranking for Asia, but Pattaya, Jakarta, Manila and Hong Kong should certainly be mentioned there.

    • Bangkok offers more variety than Pattaya. More cinemas and theatres. Pattaya is unique but mainly focused on the sex industry. There are quite nice places there with good live music and excellent discotheques, but still a different kind of audience. The red light district in Amsterdam is also nice, but the same goes for it: many tourists for the coffee shops and the Red Light district.

Bangkok is more a reflection of normal Thailand. There you have to look up the bear and gogo bars such as Nana, Patpong and Soi Cowboy. In Pattaya you are in the middle of it all. The advantage of this is that everything in South Pattaya is within walking distance. In Bangkok you always need a taxi.

Bangkok and Chiangmai the two best cities in the world?
Come on. And on what basis?
I think a lot has been shoved under the table to get into that ranking.

  4. Dear Nick,

Chiang Mai is not in the above list, but I assume you are referring to the results of Bangkok and Chiang Mai in the 2010 World's Best Awards by Travel + Leisure magazine, an international publication of American Express. A lot has already been said and written about this last summer on the English language blogs, especially by expats living in Thailand.
