The reform proposal for the Thai police is almost ready. The Royal Thai Police has made a plan in which the application of new technology is paramount. This should ensure greater transparency of the police apparatus, and the aim is also to improve the image of the police.

The plan includes ideas for installing cameras in patrol cars and purchasing bodycams for officers. Costs are still a problem, according to Deputy Chief Commissioner Rungrot. For example, 150.000 cameras would have to be purchased, there is only a budget for 60.000.

Other proposals in the plan deal with preventing corruption, better enforcement of the law, reorganization, personnel development and involving the public in policing.

Chief Commissioner Chakthip also wants better service at police stations. It must be faster, more polite and more mindful of citizens' rights.

The reform proposal comes in response to continued reports of corruption and the buying of positions in the police force. Prime Minister Prayut is even considering using Article 44 of the interim constitution to put an end to this.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu, this is not that easy because everything has to be laid down in laws. Existing laws must also be scrutinized for this.

And now my question is, what will they do with all those camera images?
This afternoon, another one ripped through the red light and then over the expulsion planes at a busy intersection between Lamphun and Pasang.
At this intersection there are four camera axles hanging from light poles facing all directions.
Do you think the uncle cop sitting there in the police box at this intersection registers the images and does something .
You will only be lucky if the footage is used for evidence if it results in a serious accident .

When I read it like this, I would almost start to think that those (body) cams are not so much or only intended to detect criminal offenses, but also, for example, to be able to assess the behavior of the officers themselves afterwards.
For now, my rose colored glasses are green for these plans.

Problems that have existed for years are not solved in a day. Changing a mindset takes a lot of time. It is to be commended that this process has now begun. Also my glasses on green.
