Since the collapse of the purchase prices for rice, Thai rice farmers have been at a loss. Prayut says the government will support farmers financially, but there are limits.

The prime minister announced yesterday, after a meeting of the National Rice Policy Committee (NRPC), that 18 billion baht will be made available to farmers. It must be farmers who grow other types of rice than Hom Malo, because 20 billion baht has already been promised for these farmers at an earlier stage. That financial support caused resentment among other rice farmers. They also wanted help from the government.

Prayut emphasizes that the government cannot afford to keep taking a lot of money from the state coffers to help farmers. The prime minister denounces the fact that farmers are too dependent on the government: “It is time for farmers to start working differently, such as more diversity of crops and by setting up cooperatives”. In addition, farmers must learn to work sustainably, such as using less water, land consolidation, smaller fields and production costs must be reduced.

About 661.886 farmers will benefit from the 18 billion baht in aid. They receive 10.500 baht per ton of white rice that is stored in sheds for a certain period of time. More than 91.000 farmers from Pathum Thani who grow jasmine rice will get 11.399 baht per ton.

Farmers who do not have their own storage space must approach cooperatives that can store rice for them. Unlike the farmers in the Northeast, the farmers in the central part of Thailand do not have rice barns because they sell the rice immediately after harvesting.

    Well,

Wasn't the previous government sent away because of the rice mortgage system?
The government was no good at all with that system.

And guess what………… the Prayut government is going to do the same…….

Two years ago, the Prayut government said that everyone should grow something else.
Why will you, you will get money from the government anyway and wala, they were right.

Good luck Thailand, you will need that.

For years, rice of the same “hom mali” quality has been available in the surrounding countries at the current price… It has always been a mystery to me why Thai rice farmers wanted to sell their rice 2 to 3 times more expensive… Of course the Thai market then collapses in…and now they have to bear the consequences!

The father of my Thai family...now well into his 80s, actually grew rice with buffaloes and carts...everything was done by hand...including irrigation and weeding. It took many months, but the harvest was plentiful and the quality excellent... Now it has become an activity that lasts several weeks, pesticides are sprayed so that it has become one poison, they used to also have crabs and fish in the rice fields which also served as food. That's all over, the quality is nowhere near what it used to be...the crabs are rare and so are the poisoned fish; more and more cases of cancer are becoming visible. But now entire families have their smartphones that they use all day long to spout the biggest nonsense on “Line” or “Facebook”… they also all have color TVs that they lie in front of all day and eat their fill. so that at an average age they all develop diabetes problems and obesity became an everyday accepted occurrence.
    Poor Thailand…

The region around Nakhon Sawan consists of clay soil, so you should try growing something there that is not flooded. The ground is as hard as concrete. Only rice and a little vegetables go with a lot of effort and in small quantities. The rent for machines has become so high that profits are minimal. If the harvest fails, too much water rot this year, too dry last year, you're done. Then to the aid fund for financial aid, you are told to "wait" again and again by corrupt officials. These people never see their money and the debts pile up. I already see fields that are simply left fallow. They will be bought up, I think. The aid is therefore justified, but it must also be paid out.
