Chaos in Bangkok due to rain

According to the Bangkok Post, it is chaos in Bangkok as the rain continues to come. More and more streets are flooded and traffic is once again stuck. 24 mm of rain fell in the past 60 hours, the water level in the canals has also risen as a result.

The municipality of Bangkok (BMA) says that they are doing their best to prevent more flooding by installing water pumps, among other things.

Vice Governor Chakkaphan announced yesterday that two water tunnels will be added, one of which is almost ready. In August, a 6,4 kilometer long tunnel in Bang Sue will be tested. The next one will be completed in 2019, a 9,4 km tunnel in Prawet.

Bangkok now has seven tunnels for water drainage, which have a combined capacity of 155,2 cubic meters per second. The largest are in Makassan (5,98 km, diameter 4,6 meters) and under the Rama IX Road (5,11 km, diameter 5 meters). Both discharge into the Chao Phraya, the other five are less effective against flooding because they drain the water into canals.

Chakkaphan thinks that the Bangkokians should complain less about the flooding, after all, they themselves are partly the cause of it. The residents throw waste into sewers and canals, which causes blockages. In addition, the illegal construction on the edge of canals hinders the smooth flow of water.

  1. Jacques says up

All truths like a cow. All that rubbish that blocks the water drainage system is partly to blame for this. What I do wonder is whether this will cover the load, because Bangkok is a low-lying swamp area and the Chao Phraya River is part of this and according to the law of communicating vessels, all that water will also flow up on the lowest lying areas, so we cannot offer a total solution for this. In my opinion, more is needed to solve this problem.
