The public transport company of Bangkok (BMTA) intends to make a bus ticket more expensive. This is necessary because the company is deeply in debt. The debts together amount to more than 100 billion baht.

Transport Secretary Pichit proposed the increase yesterday during a meeting with the management of the BMTA. The city bus company makes 4 to 5 billion baht annually.

Pichit has asked the BMTA to come up with a remediation plan. He wants to end the big losses. The secretary of state thinks it is fairer to make commuters in Bangkok pay more than to shift the debt burden onto every taxpayer in Thailand, because now the government is closing the gaps in the budget.

The rate increase is a first step and a short-term measure, says Pichit. In the long term, the company needs to be vetted and reorganized.

Only 100 billion baht in debt, wonder how much all these state-owned companies are carrying for a debt in total.

I would start with a purge in the top… 100 billion in debt with 5 billion a year in revenue. Somewhere something of that 5 billion is hanging on the bow, I suspect. But yes, welcome to Thailand 55555
