Home » Reader question » Reader question: Getting wedding rings made in Bangkok
Dear readers,
We are going to Bangkok in November. We would like to have our wedding rings made there, but are only in Bangkok for a short week (and will return to Belgium afterwards). Do you think it is possible to have wedding rings made in such a short time?
Do you have tips about what we should pay attention to and possibly good addresses where we can go?
Thank you in advance !
Regards,
Lynn
If I were you I would buy the rings in Belgium, the gold in Thailand is more yellow in color,
and considerably softer gold, and moreover if those gold sellers get wind of “greenhorns”
Will they give you another ear in terms of value or carat, not in my opinion.
Can certainly be done. One already has a suit on 2 days. I myself had 2 gold Buddhas made in Pattaya in a gold shop, at the beginning of Walking Street on the corner, 53 gr and 35 gr. made of old damaged gold that I brought with me. However, there is a 10 percent loss. It was 14 years ago and I paid approximately 3000 bath for a Buddha.
Hello Lynn,
If they can make a tailor-made suit in 24 hours, I am convinced that two wedding rings should also work. If you insist and report that you need them quickly, everything is possible and not too much down payment. I experienced it myself with a silver bracelet. I wanted to buy this but it was too short. They didn't want to make it any bigger. When I reported that the sale was canceled then it was suddenly possible and within an hour it was done.
Good luck and have fun out there.
Dear Lynn,
There is a very good and reliable address in Bangkok for making gold rings.
What is very important with rings is the correct carat, because eg a ring with a high carat has a short lifespan due to wear.
Here is an address where we have had very good experiences, and who work with the same alloys as in Europe on request.
Gems. Gallery International -Manufacturer.
198/23-24 Rama 6 Rd Samsennai, Phayathai
Bangkok 10400. Tel. 66(0)2271-0150.
And for free Transport without obligation to buy… 66(0)81-6101010.
Good address. I made a purchase twice at the branch in Chiang Mai. An appraisal afterwards showed that it was fine. I bought rings in white gold. One according to own specs.
Bangkok is full of gold shops, we also bought our wedding ring there, very good price and no ear sewn.
Many who comment here write about the Thai gold that is sold everywhere in the state controlled gold trade.
This is gold, which is usually bought as an investment, and has a yellow color because of its purity.
Although these gold merchants also sell rings, it is actually not recommended because of the softness of the gold, because it does not have such a long life.
In contrast to the 24 karat gold that people buy there, the European gold of 14 or 18 karat is much more suitable for a ring.
That is why it is better to buy a wedding ring from a goldsmith who also works with other alloys, which I have already mentioned in my response above.
There is a shopping gallery (west side) near ARI (BTS) station. In the middle of the gallery on the right is a stall where they make their own rings. Had one made there 6 years ago with gold from the Netherlands.
Was very affordable, 6.000 bath for two rings and the weight loss was less than 10% (a 25 Euro in gold). I had the rings appraised at a jeweler in the Netherlands and he was amazed at the quality.
Also, the gold was equal to what was brought there.
18 karat gold is 75% gold.
14 karat gold is 58.5% gold.
The more gold, the softer, the sooner it wears out.
More than 18 carat is actually unsuitable for jewelry.
For wedding rings, which I assume are meant to last, 14 karat is best suited.
Buy some 14 karat scrap gold, from a gold dealer, or some jewelry or other gold that won't get any interest at auction. Know the weight of gold in advance and then calculate the value of pure gold based on the gold price.
And then take that to Thailand. The fact that the rings will be a bit more difficult to sell in the Netherlands afterwards because a Dutch quality mark is missing does not seem to me to be an objection for wedding rings.
The gold shops are obliged to state the current buying and selling price on a note on the door or window. so you can see for yourself, he is also daily in the bangkok post
If you want to give a Thai lady gold, for example, a necklace, it is better to buy it in Thailand. The lower foreign carat values are not really appreciated, and are also difficult to exchange later at the goldsmith/
And as a total layman in Thailand, how did you get the guarantee that you will not get back an inferior gold mixture in the rings?
Archimedes in Classical Greece had all that problem to solve until…EURECA…the insight broke through.
My mother-in-law – Indian – thought back in her old country to buy a beautiful diamond necklace. Beautiful papers included, but in NL… those stones… turned out to be a beautiful imitation, and the gold… only evaporated on the outside.
