Home » Reader question » Thailand question: Why is the Thai consulate in Amsterdam suddenly closed?
Dear readers,
I am looking for reliable information about the sudden closure of the Thai Consulate in Amsterdam. A buddy of mine is now in NL and lives in 020 but had to go to The Hague for his visa.
The fixed numbers as well as the mobile number are not available and the website of the Consulate itself is also offline.
I am friends with Richard Ruijgrok (the Thai consul in Amsterdam) but his mobile number has also been disconnected and I can no longer reach him via Whatsapp, so I am also a bit worried.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Marc

I hardly follow Thai visa matters, but I remember that earlier this year the announcement came that many consulates are closed. Not only Amsterdam but also in Belgium, Germany and so on. Only the embassies still apply for Thai visas?
See, among other things, “TB Immigration Infobrief No. 035/21: No more visa applications through the Amsterdam consulate”: https://www.thailandblog.nl/dossier/visum-thailand/immigratie-infobrief/tb-immigration-infobrief-nr-035-21-geen-visa-aanvragen-meer-via-consulaat-amsterdam/
Just because they don't handle visas or other consular matters anymore doesn't mean they don't exist anymore.
“The Royal Thai Consulate in Antwerp will remain a Consular Post with further to determine duties, but obviously honorary activities only and not effective consular ones.”
http://www.thaiconsulate.be/
The same for Antwerp, with the result that they cannot follow at the embassies now
I understood that the E-Visa would replace the application in person. In faith in the UK this is already the case. but Thailand wouldn't be Thailand if something that works well is first abolished and only then started up On Line. As a result, there are now long queues at the Embassies. It's crazy that you can only make an appointment in 7 to 8 weeks.
They want a lot of tourists but really do everything to make it harder for people to go.
ditto closed in Germany.

Too bad, that was always super helped by the friendly and helpful people there and after or usually within an hour your visa again, and everything is ready so soon another ditgital hassle, really a pity.
The Thai consulate has not closed “suddenly”, but I think it has been closed for many months, maybe even a year. Everyone has to go to the embassy in The Hague for a visa application. Nothing new.
But whoever wants this can also enter Thailand as a tourist, then automatically gets 30 days, and during that time apply for a visa here in Thailand. Do bring income data/documents and have the right insurance, etc.
So you would think, especially now that tourism is being scaled up: open the consulates again quickly for visa applications.
The Thai Embassy in The Hague states on Their Site..that the Thai Consulate in Amsterdam will no longer issue Visas..from 28-May 2021..
Therefore, all Visa applications must be applied for at The Embassy In DH.
Hr Richard Ruijgrok is/was Honorary Consul v Thailand In Amsterdam, so Unpaid..
However, there were/are 2 permanent employees employed plus office space that was rented, so a portion of those visa tokens will have served as expenses for The Consulate!
Richard was/is besides Hon.Consul also Lawyer by profession & has some business interests In Thailand!
So it is possible that He is now staying in Thailand & earning!
Best regards.
