Home » Reader question » Reader question: My travel accident insurance with VAB via KBC is about to expire
Dear readers,
I have been staying in Thailand since March 2, 2020. My travel accident insurance with VAB via KBC expires on March 1, 2021. I will stay in Thailand until May 31, 2021. It is impossible to extend with VAB via KBC. I have to be in Belgium for that. Taking out insurance in Thailand with SCB costs more than 130.000 baht. My date of birth is 10/12/1948. So 72 years…. Other banks refuse because of my age (70 plus…).
Who can tell me where I can take out travel accident insurance in Belgium, knowing that I am already staying in Thailand?
Sincere thanks for your help!
Groet
Willy (BE)
Editors: Do you have a question for the readers of Thailandblog? Use it contact form..
If you really only care about accident insurance, 130.000 baht is of course a ridiculous amount. Later today I will ask my (Thai) partner, who works here for one of the largest insurers, what that really should cost in your situation. A fraction of that amount, I suspect, for accident insurance…..
Thank you Cornelis, I look forward to the answer from your Thai partner!
Around 6500 baht per year and for that you will receive a maximum of 80.000 baht hospital costs reimbursed per accident - number not limited. A payment of 1 million baht in case of accidental death.
Amounts are of course adjustable.
Danke, which company or organization, Cornelis?
You can still take out travel insurance directly with VAB, which will cost you just over 500 euros for a year, you do not need KBC for that
In NL I pay less than 60 euros per year for a comprehensive travel insurance….
OK, thanks, but 500 € is not less…
The word says it all it is travel accident insurance. The maximum period of your trip is 365 consecutive days. So you really have to be back in Belgium to close again.
I myself took the risk for the extra months and nothing happened.
Travel accident insurance is limited in time and means that you cannot stay permanently in the same place and you must also be domiciled in Belgium.
Regards,
Geert
What coverage is it? Is it really just about accident insurance? What is really important to you?
And what is the risk if you don't have insurance?
Given the price of 130.000 baht, I suspect the bank thought you wanted health insurance. Travel and accident insurance usually costs no more than a few tenners per month.
Try https://www.aainsure.net/, they can certainly help you further
.
I also have travel accident insurance with KBC through an insurance agent.
Worldwide insured 16,65 euros per month for 2 persons at home and abroad.
Dear Willie,
At that moment you have been away from Belgium for more than eight months. Despite your nationality, it may very well be that the travel insurance no longer pays in the event of damage.
At least that's how it is arranged in the Netherlands. You must be registered in the BRP and actually live there for more than 4 months. In all other cases you have to look for an insurer for expats.
I have an expat continuous travel insurance with Oom insurance costs about 25 euros / month.
Use it to your advantage.
Good luck,
Antonius
You can inquire with Qover Long Trip Travel Insurance and for me as a 63 year old it costs me 255 €.
There is accident and repatriation included but no Covid cover.
You can join without living in Belgium, have been using it for 5 years.

Under the umbrella of Allianz and Lloyds Register and cover up to 3.000.000 €.
To join, a Belgian domicile is necessary, this is clearly stated in their general terms and conditions
You can also close online. I did a year ago. Go to vab. be.
Impossible. I have to be in Belgium for that…
Thanks anyway!
