Airlines that normally fly over Pakistan have had to reroute their routes. The airspace over the country has been closed due to a flared border dispute with neighboring India. KLM also flies, it is unclear how many flights are involved.

Pakistan has immediately closed its airspace, according to a so-called NOTAM published by Eurocontrol, the European air traffic control organization.

An initial inventory by the organization shows that some 400 flights pass through Pakistani airspace every day, which will be diverted through the airspace of Oman, southwest of Pakistan.

Longer travel times KLM

A side effect is that there will be extra flights over Iran, and fewer over Georgia and Azerbaijan. Airlines are free to choose how they divert their flights.

KLM must also divert flights to Asian destinations. Which flights exactly is unclear. Passengers should, however, take longer travel times into account.

Cancellations THAI Airways International

THAI Airways International goes one step further than detours, as it has canceled a number of flights to and from European cities. The flights to and from Brussels are also involved.

24Radar

This morning at 9 am Thai time I made a screenshot of the 24Radar website, which shows how the flights fly over Oman on the Arabian Peninsula.

Finally

If you are flying to or from Thailand these days, make sure to contact the travel agency or airline so that you are not faced with any surprises.

    Thai Airways apparently flies back.

Another good example of what I consider to be a comical use of the word back by Flemish people.
No Ronny, Thai doesn't just fly back, because first the planes go somewhere and then back again!

      • RonnyLatYa says up

I'm not saying they just fly back. Will someone still be on that plane 😉

      • Patrick says up

Dear Gringo : Ronny is right. 'Back' is also synonymous with 'again'.

        • RonnyLatYa says up

          Is a Gringo joke, Patrick.
He knows quite well what we mean by "back".

If flights are cancelled, keep an eye on the permitted length of stay in Thailand, so that an "overstay" does not occur unintentionally.

Consult with Immigration in good time.

    • Rewin Buyl says up

Dear Lagemaat, I experienced it once, my return flight to Belgium was cancelled, so I could only leave the next day. I had to pay 1.000 baht overstay even though I could prove that my flight had been canceled the day before. These are one of those actions by the Thai Immigration inspectors that makes me VERY ANGRY! Meanwhile, AFTER 15 years of coming to Thailand, I have already learned to think in my mind, FUCKUP,!! and to pay. There is nothing to argue against.!!

Thai airways flies to Europe again, back and forth, back and forth….

  4. Peter says up

What a hassle, is it really that difficult to lower the flight routes a little bit, what nonsense from some airlines, it must have something to do with money, as always with those guys. Or will a bigger problem have to arise first? Man oh man, just change the routes and flights, take your loyal customers where they should be, without all that hassle.

    • RonnyLatYa says up

I don't think anyone just flies around.
      Or am I that stupid?
And if an airspace is closed, I prefer that there is some consultation about who will fly where and when.
      Making new appointments…
Could all be nonsense as you say, but I prefer some consultation…

    • Jack S says up

Dear Peter, if only everything were so simple. The escape routes cannot simply be moved. It's almost like changing a railroad track. Escape routes are agreements with countries they pass through. Then dozens of airlines fly. They all have to have a new route calculated. Then there must always be certain air stations that ensure that aircraft do not collide with each other.
It's about the safety of you and all other passengers.
And indeed there is also a cost associated with it. An airline does not exist because they just want to please you, but it must also be possible to fly at a profit. And that you and many others can buy a ticket for less than 600 Euros, which cost 20 Euros about 1200 years ago, has you not even thought about it? Where is the profit there?

Perhaps EVA AIR, as an Asian airline, will get permission to fly on a certain route and KLM, as a European airline, will not.

  7. Herman V says up

What is it with KLM?! Cancel
Just because they have to fly around something?! Flew to BKK with FinnAir on Tuesday/Wednesday, just before the closure of Pakistani airspace! I saw that Finnair also had very big problems now, but they will fulfill their obligations!!

  8. Ron Piest says up

Yesterday, the EVA air flight was also canceled, just like the Thai airways flights. As a result, not much leaves for Bangkok.
    Maybe better tomorrow.

    • Cornelis says up

Not the flight to Amsterdam, because it is not operated on Wednesdays.

  9. johan says up

Flight KL 875 has just left as scheduled for BKK... so it has not been cancelled

    • Lessram says up

Looking at flightradar24, I can see everything flying below at this moment (23:40).

    • Cornelis says up

I see that at the moment (Saturday afternoon) there are no flights over Pakistan yet. The EVA flight from Bangkok - which departs from Amsterdam tonight - is on its way but has chosen a more southerly route.

  10. Nicky says up

Does anyone know what the situation is with other companies? the Middle East companies? Turkish Airlines?
and others? I only read about the direct flights to Europe

    • Cornelis says up

Emirates flies a more southerly route to Bangkok from Dubai anyway, and doesn't 'touch' Pakistan – if I'm right.

  11. Dick Spring says up

No EVA air flight has been cancelled.info: the platform officer of Eva air .
    Mvg Dick.

  12. johan says up

Flew to the Netherlands with eva air on 28 Feb.
We left late + 40 minutes.
And we arrived in Amsterdam at 21.20, flying a winding route. We should have landed at 19.35 according to my reservation.
Flying is getting more and more dangerous with all those idiots shooting planes out of the sky.

  13. Adrie says up

Just called Evaair bkk and Saturday's flight is normally on schedule, ;(

If there are still people whose flight was canceled a few days ago, they will not take precedence.

  14. Pierre Broeckx says up

We were supposed to fly back to Brussels with Thai on February 28. Pakistan airspace closed, so it was not possible. There is nothing you can do about it at that moment. But being sent from pillar to post since then is way beyond that. So we have been given a certain departure day, namely ''March 10''. Staying on standby every day, we can – perhaps – return earlier. Every flight full sir, stand-by sir, maybe sir. They don't do anything and basically just laugh at you. No hotel, since last night, after 1 day, free water and a little bit of food. Stupid falangals only have to bring in money. Perhaps in Thailand in the future, but certainly never again with Thaiairways, never again.
March 10, 3 places were still available.

    • Cornelis says up

It seems to me that this is very clearly a situation of 'force majeure'. Even if it concerned a flight that falls under European rules – Regulation 261/2004 – (which is not the case in this case), the airline would not be obliged to pay compensation.

    • Adrie says up

      This is what I mean.

People who had booked and at the moment they fly again simply go on the flight that was booked.
Your flight was cancelled, so join the back.

Have also experienced this a few years ago, and do not remember what the problem was, but at 00.00 bkk opened again.

Flight China airlines departure 2.30 then went where we went, while there were hundreds waiting in bkk.

It was a bit of a hassle to get to the check-in bali 🙂
