Recently I settled in Hua Hin as a Dutch retired farang and new member of the NVTHC, who is looking for a bridge club. It probably doesn't exist here at the moment. So I ask interested parties to contact me so that we can set up something similar.

The idea is to get together for an evening every two weeks, like at “Say Cheese” in the center of Hua Hin. For example, to play "duplicate bridge", you need at least two tables, so eight people. Ideal is at least twelve people, because I know that many of us are often absent due to travel and family visits at home.

    Be careful when playing bridge.

I'd do some more research on that.

Card games are illegal in Thailand, including bridge

    @Max

    Love this proposal.

Years ago, a similar initiative in Pattaya was stopped by the local gendarme with the elderly being taken away and fined for illegal gambling.
I believe some of these card players are still traumatized.

You have to make a difference between playing at home and organizing a tournament with prizes (money).

Playing at home for entertainment is no problem at all.

Organizing a tournament and/or playing for “profit” is prohibited.

But that is exactly the same in the Netherlands/Belgium.

I will take the Netherlands as an example for a poker game.

In the Netherlands you can organize a poker tournament as long as it is closed. An example is then indicated: within the family' or 'in the domestic circle'.

In the Netherlands it is prohibited if there is a commercial offer. An example is then given: if opportunity is offered on a regular and systematic basis to participate in poker (Note to self, do not mention the word business).

And what does a club do: regularly and systematically offer an opportunity to play.

But there is an additional exception:

It is still allowed if a prize or premium cannot be won in any way. Even a free drink or cup is not allowed.

You see, Thai and Dutch laws are not that different.

The old people in Pattaya, who played a tournament with a "prize", were also banned in the Netherlands.

Such a club is basically prohibited in Thailand. So be very careful.

“Legally speaking, public bridge competitions need to be sanctioned by the club first, like the one in Pattaya, which has been a member of the club for over a decade. It's not illegal to play bridge in the confines of your own home, however

There is a club in HuaHin where my wife and I always play when we are in HuaHin during the winter months.
The club is led by Betty Doran (English lady) and has a license to play.
Send her an email for more information.
