A travel agency in Pattaya had written me a plane ticket that turned out not to be confirmed at the airport in Bangkok on the day of departure! That's why I couldn't leave for the Philippines. Called the travel agency but the phone was not answered.

Because it was the last day of my Thai visa, I was forced to buy a new plane ticket at the airport with which I could leave for the Philippines that same day.

Two weeks later I was back in Thailand. In Pattaya, the travel agency PTA turned out to be closed. At the Beach Road police station I tried to report this, but a Dutch volunteer immediately told me that reporting was pointless and a waste of my and his time.

I then went to the tourist police (on the hill), they took me seriously and I got a report what to show me at the beach road police station. There this worthless volunteer told me to come back tomorrow.

The next day they made me wait 4 hours to file a report, which I finally managed to do…. During those 4 hours of waiting, seen that victims of jet ski scams were told that they just had to pay to those Thai scammers, the Dutch agent was also there.

The police did not help the victims at all. Even worse they have to leave the police station she was yelled at, one of them crying said he didn't have the money…
Called the police station again later, but no result or decent answer.

It is a pity that as a tourist in Thailand you are already abandoned with simple problems.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to do business here, then if you get into trouble where do you go? Lawyer? He asks 100.000 baht as an advance before he has done anything, a friend said.

In Thailand, especially Pattaya, as a foreigner you have no rights at all. Corruption in the police and lawyers just let themselves be paid and promise a lot but do absolutely nothing. Theft and scams bring in a lot of money for Thais and the police often join the Thais for extra tips. Just keep your hands off everything and take advantage of the nice weather. Have already been robbed for 300.000 by Thai + moped stolen from 120.000 baht. That Thai girl now works for the police and her uncle drove my stolen moped. Stole it back from the police. He possibly came to take my moped back in my condo, but after 1 hour of discussion, the police left without it and have not heard anything from it. Other police said : have take care of you motobike ,,, This is a police state where they have everything to say and foreigners are exploited and we should be happy that we can go on holiday there.
It's not like the Netherlands and Belgium where foreigners have all rights and benefit from the state.

      Yes Luke,
I know about this case, unfortunately it was not limited to this case.
Even with a debit card without a pin code, your ex-girlfriend could withdraw a large amount.
As well as that the security of the (expensive) condo complex fully cooperated in the break-in.
I have raised the matter for you at a high level …………………( to BKK )
You are and remain a farrang and therefore (often) without rights, so people promised everything
      but did nothing.
The most shocking thing I found was the behavior of the bank (they have agreements worldwide
regarding client protection ) and that while for the rest I am always very satisfied with this one
      Bank .
Indeed , do not interfere with anything , go your own way .
(Even if you see a Thai guy fall off his moped when he's drunk, don't help (and that's hard
especially if you see that he/she is injured) because when the Thai emergency services are on the scene
you are blamed for causing the “accident”……..
Still, there are enough beautiful things left in this country ( pattaya is a 'state within a kingdom ' ) to enjoy
to enjoy and there are also many Thais who are honest.

      greeting

      e

the above is typical of Pattaya in particular, it is not for nothing that many policemen have bars and karaoke, and it is common knowledge among Thais that certain jet ski exploits are actually owned by the black money of the police….
Low wages … but the oh so useful uniform make it possible to move up the ladder.
as for the 'farang police volunteers” at tourist polce , I suspect that with the few exceptions, most of them see this as a solution to obtain residence status .. nothing more!

And then some expats find it strange that many Thai people take to the streets because they are tired of this kind of practices (which are not only applied to expats and tourists, but also to the Thai themselves)………….

Commonplaces galore. Thailand is bad and the rest of the world is good. Oh no, sir, this does not happen to you in the Netherlands? There is no scam and scam ?

So what do you do in Pattaya? You must go to Thailand!

I have been living in peripheral Nongkhai for 12 years, have known this country and especially the periphery for 22 years, and have never been robbed or cheated by anyone.

It is too easy to utter slogans such as 'no rights', 'everyone corrupt', Unfortunately it is also in this country a small group that spoils it for the great majority. That small group is of course where the naive tourists come. They are easy prey. There is enough warning in forums to keep your eyes and ears open, but unfortunately, people are not careful.

The rest of Thailand is really different. I understand that it is difficult to accept this if you have been robbed, but if you broaden your field of vision, you will encounter the real Thailand.

Completely agree, you read negative reactions about Thailand so often that I wonder, what are those people doing here?
What also strikes me is that this negativity very often comes from the tourist areas.

Never has 1 Baht been stolen from me in Thailand and the first police officer who didn't act decently
does me I have yet to meet.

Haha, most normal thing in the world here in Thailand. My friend has a business here and pays the police every month. It's corrupt up to and including . If you don't cooperate, they will just close your case... he even appoints a lawyer and pays a big deposit!!! Result Advokaatje worked together with the police and advance payment......going....Better not open a case here because sponsored as farang is already enough here. Every bath you invest here goes forever!! Nothing coming back to you.
Know so many who have already lost millions here and in the 13 years that I have been here I have yet to meet the first farang who has become rich here.
Be careful donkey don't hit the same stone twice

Luke is absolutely right. falangs here have no rights.
When my friend was killed here and I went to the hospital, the police chief was there
He just said falang mauw I said he don't drink and then to the doctor (you take blood) the doctor turned to the police chief and said (we don't smell alcohol)
The police chief shrugged his shoulders and that was it. No investigation, no perpetrator, nothing and there were witnesses outside the hospital, they were not even heard.
This happened in Thailand in phuket .Maybe not the real Thailand, too?

Tourist police are not police!! Is a point of contact for foreigners, farang also called ATM machine at Thai police!! The tourist police is there to better serve tourists against the thai corrupt police (imagine here that the tourist police would certainly be thanked for their services if they lost their fellow corrupt colleague) Take a look at trouble in paradise beautiful documentary that shows very well what tourist police do and what their place is! You guessed it at the bottom of the ladder.

    • RonnyLatPhrao says up

Tourist police are indeed police and are certainly not at the bottom of the ladder.
On the contrary, they are paid better because they are supposed to speak English as well.

You are mistaken with the 'farang police volunteers' at the tourist police.

      • karin cuvillier says up

I think you said very nicely “because they are supposed to speak English too”…..

One of the criticisms of the IMF and other international organizations is that Thailand has invested too little in good education.
Of course there are Coopers everywhere and nothing is all black or all white, but don't be the devil's advocate. Take, for example, the fact that foreigners pay more for many things and services than Thai people is already discriminatory. So a rich Thai pays less than a poor foreigner??

The tourist police is even worse than the thai police; A tip before renting take pictures and when you rent a moped give a different address than where you stay.

About 10 years ago I also had a bad experience with the Tourist Police in Pattaya. What surprised me most was that my side of the story was not heard at all. “Pay the man” (a Jetski scammer) was snapped at me by a Thai police officer.

Last year a Dutch acquaintance of mine was found murdered in his hotel room. The police very quickly erased traces and stated that it was a natural death. The poor man's throat had been cut, a large pool of blood lay on the bed and on the floor.

While passing through the Isaan, a Dutchman who lived there once said that the beautiful (stone) houses belonged to farang or police officers.

So I can name a few stories from my own experience. On the Internet you can read many stories about the power of the police in Thailand. The Farang Policevolunteers in Pattaya sometimes have a criminal record in their country of origin. So don't expect anything from that.

I find Erik Kuijpers' response very easy. Of course you shouldn't go everywhere with your eyes open, but to be seen as a hunted game is also going too far for me. If you are new to Thailand, it is almost inevitable that you will be cheated or scammed. When it comes to reasonable amounts, that's not so bad, you pay tuition and move on. When it comes to your life it is deeply sad.

Thailand is a very corrupt country, like all Southeast Asian countries. The protests in Bangkok against the Yinluck regime are also a middle class protest that is fed up with that.

I would first like to respond to the emerging problem of your flight ticket not being revalidated, because I think this was the cause of various problems, right? You are responsible that your flight ticket is reconfirmed before your departure, you must check this and inquire 24 hours before departure. With most airlines this is done automatically nowadays, but you will not see it in all cases. Whether you have to reconfirm is stated in your conditions of carriage.

Furthermore, the corruption with all the things listed in the above comments are sad, and what is even sadder, actually well known. A Thai, a uniform and the unique amalgamation between these two gives power and exploits both foreigners and local people.
I don't come to the famous Pattaya or Puket where apparently most of these scams occur and also many "accidents" with Farangs occur.
I've said it before, and do what you want with this, keep thinking clearly! If you're not familiar with it, stay away from it! The above-mentioned things are widely known, so why do you risk it?
Stay sober, on many fronts, and don't be tempted in any area.
Why does this mainly happen to male farang? And yes, I know that more men travel to Thailand than women! Is there not enough thinking?
Does it happen to you or do you bring it on yourself? On and in what occasions does this happen/happen to you?
And yes, I know that I am touching a sensitive chord and many readers will be annoyed, but here you read the ecsessen and I respond to that because I know that there will be many readers who will never experience these situations. And after 16 years I can have an opinion of myself. Maybe as a woman I can also look a bit more objectively because I am not captivated by Thai beauty, but especially by Thai beauty in general.

And I know that a lot has happened and that unjustified things happen. I am not foreign to the world and I do not come from a village, but I stay in Bangkok and alternately in Hua Hin and live my own life in which I interfere little with others and above all enjoy unobtrusively (sometimes difficult as a blonde Westerner) what Thailand has to offer.

Of course I have now exaggerated it from my mindset and experience but I do this because it is such a shame to let a stay in such a beautiful country be tarnished by things that you can prevent.
And what you can't prevent try to solve it and make sure you don't end up in such a situation again.

“A travel agency in Pattaya had written me a flight ticket that turned out not to be confirmed at the airport in Bangkok on the day of departure! ”

      Why should he reconfirm anything?
I understand from the above text that he bought and paid for a ticket through a travel agency in Pattaya, but that this travel agency did not order his ticket or, more likely, did not pay for his ticket from that company.
If you order a ticket in the Netherlands / Belgium, you do not have to confirm your outward flight. (The return flight is slightly different)

So what responsibility…. This has nothing to do with reconfirming a return flight for an existing ticket. If he orders a ticket for a specific day, he can assume that it has been confirmed for the outbound flight.
He may have to confirm the return flight to Thailand from the Philippines in the Philippines.

Response to Eric Kuijpers, Hopefully it will never happen to you, but it can certainly happen. Of course that doesn't happen to everyone, but if you have a setback and you encounter it, you usually can't do anything about it. You have no rights at all in Thailand unless you happen to be very friends with senior police or something. I am certainly not a naive tourist with a small field of vision or something. I speak fluent Thai and know the Thai mentality very well and have been married to a Thai for 35 years from a richer family. Not a bargirl, but 1 police also advised me not to incur many costs, just pay the police to help something and get it done. Have full address and copy of passport of that person. She did security breaking in and lived with Thai men I don't know for 4 months in my condos. They shared and used drugs up to and including. 2 Thai men were arrested in my condos by Thai police and imprisoned in corat while I was abroad. That woman works for the police and remains free. I happened to see her in corat, talked to her and she is building a house worth 1,5 million baht. It will be ready next month. She now works there as a police officer and also wore a vest with a police emblem. She even stole a gold chain from a Thai woman that day. Her father was going to go to the police, I gave her ID, but another Thai friend advised against it as the police work very slowly and probably won't do anything about it anyway. So little happens with theft among Thais. I think a lot has deteriorated with the new government under Jingluck, who is a woman and whom Thais look down on and may be incapable of governing a country, but that is also Thai, they should not be smart. Nice and being a woman is enough.

A tourist police volunteer even lives near me.
I even know him quite well .
Has for himself , more problems than he can handle .
Believe it or not he is even 70 years old .
However , do not be surprised in Thailand , surprise yourself .

Well, if Luc has been staying here for so long, he should know the tricks of the trade by now.

Have not had any problems myself (“knock on the door”), but always give expats 1 tip; always take a lawyer's card with you and then not the first one but one who is well known here and has been working for at least ten years.

Whether this works? in Pattaya certainly in Thailand; I don't know and yep again Pattaya is status apparte
Always stay calm and polite + Thai smile definitely don't get angry helps nx.
3 weeks ago with daughter on the back hit by Thaiknaapje with 2 girls on the back he came into traffic and through a red light, I remained polite and the boy waited 100x exuus for the policeman to come and
this early driver's license? yes I have but point to the kid ????
The voluntary "ambulance" quickly on site and daughter to hospital, costs nx, everything neatly handled, parents paid damages 5000 baht and later collecting the bikes also cost them another 1400 to get them released, yes, pick up mafia.

Soi 9 potitie buro neatly handled report signed in the afternoon and everything okay, but report the wife of mine saw so well-known agent and yes then everything goes smoother.

Keep smiling again, although that is often not easy, it certainly helps.

In the future, buy a ticket via the internet or go to Thai airways or buy it at the airport. Are your problems solved immediately? Good luck next time.
